No decision on Guardian Angels, Halifax mayor says

After meeting with the head of the Guardian Angels, Halifax Mayor Peter Kelly says he still needs to do more research on the New York-based patrol program before he can give a local chapter his stamp of approval.

Kelly and group founder Curtis Sliwa talked for an hour Monday in New York, where the mayor was attending a conference.

"I have some more phone calls to make, now that I have some information," Kelly told reporters Tuesday in Halifax.

The anti-crime group relies on volunteers to patrol city streets. Members wear red berets but carry no weapons. Sliwa started the group in the Bronx in 1979, and now there are chapters around the world.

Kelly said he is particularly interested in how Canadian chapters of the Guardian Angels are faring in Calgary, Toronto and Vancouver. Other chapters are in the works for Edmonton and Ottawa.

In Calgary, the group ran into opposition from city police only a few months after sending its first class of volunteers to the streets.

Now I know how to "hyper link".

Anyone two cents on this issue?

I'm skeptical on them. Unarmed citzens, making arrest. How effective can this be? I believe this can be impractical for Halifax Regional Municipality.

I caught this news piece on the radio. I think this is a mostly reactionary bit of news since it's been such a violent summer in Halifax but I don't really think the Guardian Angels would be the start of rampant vigilantism. I'm sure they're used to being under the public microscope and conduct themselves accordingly.

They are trying to set up here in Winnipeg also...it's hard to decide whether they will be a burden or a boon just based on the rhetoric.

Stick the TO boys and girls down around Jane and Finch for a one month tour of night duty. Let us know how they make out. ;)

I have respect for their mission/view, but I still remain skeptical.
