Happy St. Patrick's Day....

I'm half Irish, my name is complete Irish, yet I can't drink because of a medical ailment and a pile of assignments due by the end of the week....

Here's hoping you all recovered painlessly from last night's excess.

Happy Birthday Princess Patricia.

And for all of you interested in hagiography, St Patrick was actually Welsh -- a missionary to those heathen Irish  ;D

Uhm,

No he wasn't.

He was of Roman descent, and lived in Scotland.  He was captured by Irish Roundabouts....

Saint Patrick (c. 390 - 460)[2] (Latin: Patricius,[3] Irish: Naomh Pádraig) was a Roman Britain-born Christian missionary and is the patron saint of Ireland, along with Brigid of Kildare and Columba. He was educated at a monastery and school of divinity founded by Illtud (now Llantwit Major).

When he was about 16 he was captured by Irish raiders and taken from his native Wales as a slave to Ireland,

Ahcha!!

Mine came from the Catholic Encyclopedia, which has been around for centuries and never lies!!

Wikipedia, pfft, a pagan excuse to take away from God's truth!

He had for his parents Calphurnius and Conchessa. The former belonged to a Roman family of high rank and held the office of decurio in Gaul or Britain. Conchessa was a near relative of the great patron of Gaul, St. Martin of Tours. Kilpatrick still retains many memorials of Saint Patrick, and frequent pilgrimages continued far into the Middle Ages to perpetuate there the fame of his sanctity and miracles.

In his sixteenth year, Patrick was carried off into captivity by Irish marauders and was sold as a slave to a chieftan named Milchu in Dalriada, a territory of the present county of Antrim in Ireland, where for six years he tended his master's flocks in the valley of the Braid and on the slopes of Slemish, near the modern town of Ballymena.

Well Tess, not being a Catholic, Protestant, or even much of a Heathen.....I'll back away.

At the end of the day, I know I wasn't drinking alone, whoever those folks were  ;)

For a short period of time... ::) ... I'm back in my town.
Any time I'm here of course, you're welcome to drink here with me  ;D

Well, its already been St Paddy's Day here in beautiful tropical Queensland for almost 19 hours.

T'was back in the mid 1800's my relatives left Belfast for Ontario, then left there just after the turn of the 20th century for Saskatchewan.... Now look where I ended up, a normally relaxing tropical island on The Coral Sea, currently wating for a tropical cyclone to smash us later this week? Ha!

So I, like millions of 'Irish' Canadians and Australians value our Irish heritage. I had 'green' snags, along with some peas and mash for tea tonight

To all those Irish, and those that want to be, or wish they were, Happy Saint Paddy's Day where ever you are.

Happy St. Patrick's Day, one and all.

And to remind people that this isn't just about  :st.patty: or green beer, a bit about St. Patrick from the Catholic Encyclopaedia
Apostle of Ireland, born at Kilpatrick, near Dumbarton, in Scotland, in the year 387; died at Saul, Downpatrick, Ireland, 17 March, 493. Some sources say 460 or 461.

And for St.Patrick's Day 2010 I offer:

An Irish priest, Father O'Malley, was transferred to Queensland Catholic Church and one morning he rose from his bed on a fine spring day in his  new parish.

He walked to the window of his bedroom to get a deep breath of the beautiful day outside.  He then noticed there was a donkey lying dead in the middle of his front  lawn.

Not knowing who else to call, he promptly called the local police station..

The  conversation went like this:

''Good morning.  This is Sergeant Jones.  How might I  help you?"

"And the best of the day ter yer good self. This is  Father O'Malley at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church.  There's a donkey lying dead right in der  middle of me front lawn "

Sergeant Jones, considering himself to be quite a wit, replied with a smirk, "Well now Father, it was always my impression that you people took care of the last rites!"

There was dead silence on the line for a long moment and then Father O'Malley replied:

"Ah, to be sure, that is true; but we are also obliged to notify the next of  kin."
