Italian government to put porn tax and other budget issues to confidence vote
14/12/2005 6:28:00 PM
ROME (AP) - A proposed tax on pornography and other budget measures will be put to a confidence vote in parliament, the Italian government decided Wednesday.
The package of measures includes a new, 25-per cent tax on the income of companies that make or sell pornographic material. The government also wants to add an extra 10 percentage points to the value-added tax paid on subscriptions to pornographic television channels.
The decision to put the measures to a confidence vote was made during a cabinet meeting Wednesday, Health Minister Francesco Storace said. The vote must be held in parliament within the next 24 hours.
Since winning elections in May 2001, Premier Silvio Berlusconi's government has often used confidence votes to ensure that ruling parties close ranks and approve a measure speedily. If the government loses the vote, it must resign.
