Helping grandfather find a pal

Like the topic says I am trying to help my grand father track down someone he meet in europe awhile ago.  He has the guys address and sent some correspondence to it but to no avail.  Guessing he might've moved in the last 60 odd years(unlike my grand dad).  Anyway the address is in Ireland, but the gent served in the British navy.  I've already looked through some online phone directories but found no leads. If anyone knows a better way of tracking him down or finding out if he's even alive anymore, I'd greatly appreciate the help and advice.
