I am 16 and has been considering joining the reserves for a while.  But the problem is that I don't know if I can even do that because I am in Moose Jaw.  The only training base I know of is the sniper school in Saskatoon.  I think my summer vacation is too short to do Basic and there is probably nothing near me to do weekend training.  Is it possible to do may basic during highschool here or am I stuck waiting until I graduate?  What are the places I might go when I do my basic training?  I don't know how this is going to work.  Any help will be appreciated.

EDIT:
The regiment in MooseJaw are the Dragoons.  Nearby is the Royal Regina Rifles, if that helps.

There is no "sniper school" in Saskatoon.

These are your options for reserve units in Saskatchewan:

Mate, why don't you ring the local Militia Units in question. Their recruitng cells can answer all your questions. Better yet, take a visit down to the Currie Armouries in the Jaw on a parade night or parade Saturday. The Sask D's are one of the most switched on Militia units in western Canada.

if you pull your finger out, during the upcoming summer, you should be able to get both your recruit phase and initial employment training out of the way, but you'll need to sacrifice your summer and devote it to the CF. If thats too much for you, maybe you should think twice about your commitment. partime or not, it is the Army, and you work for them, not the other way around. There is no free rides.

WRT the sniper school, where did you hear that nonsense? Thats a good one.

Good luck.

Wes

OK thanks.  I read a page long article in the LeaderPost and it said "Near Saskatoon" like a year ago.  It might be a dumb question but what are parade nights?

that depends on the unit you join....

before you ask on here again, think about a couple of things.

1. What do you want to do in the Army.
2. Are there units in the Area that offer that trade.
3. When do they parade.

Wes hit the nail on the head here... you have to talk to them... that means pick up the phone, or go down to the armouries, or call your nearest recruiting center. those people are employed with the sole purpose of dealing with the questions you are currently wondering.

Also, If youre wondering about the BMQ/SQ Co-Op courses perhaps you should ask the teachers at your high school about that one... specifically the teachers that deal with the Co-op classes....

Good Luck. I did the Co-op program back in '99. you may get to go home every night, but belive me... the instructors make up for it when it comes time for PT, and accually moving into the field portion... its not a cakewalk. But even after 7 years, I can say its still the best thing ive ever done for myself.

cheers

Next time you are on Main Street, face North and go to the top of the hill.  Just before the Civic Center, turn Right into the fenced compound (either of the two gates will do.) and go up to the big red building that looks like a castle.  Go inside and ask a few questions.  They will be more than happy to help you.

I am surprised that they haven't gone around to A.E. Peacock Technical High School, Central HS and Riverview HS on recruiting campaigns.

I am in the process of joining the reserves as well in Saskatchewan. I live in Saskatoon, and I am 99% sure that all units in Saskatchewan, and maybe surrounding areas all do their BMQ in Dundurn which is roughly a 30 minute drive from Saskatoon. The SQ, however, takes place in Wainwright Alberta, as for units in Moose Jaw, a little effort will help you find the answers, whether that be going to www.recruiting.forces.gc.ca or just phoning the nearest recruiting center.

Good Luck.

True, but there are sniper courses run in Dundurn (20 mins away) on a regular basis, which you could have pointed out, like a friendly, responsible person, and in a manner more befitting a mod.

I was in the North Sask. Regiment B co out of Prince Albert. Had a great 3.5 yrs there prior to joining the Regular Force Navy!!!  Reserves are a great experience all around.  Spent a lot of time in Dundurn and Wainriight.  Lucked out and did my Basic in Vernon BC!!  Best of luck in the process, you won't regret it.

Yeah man, all you have to Do is Talk to them and they will point you in the Right Direction, the the place where the Dragoons do Training is At Dundurn, Sometimes if you drive by saskatoon you can see the bases watertower...or what i think is the bases water tower, im just a civie right now...for now but ya my Msn is on this so if you want to add me you can !

Hey Huber,

Make sure you look closely at each post, where you'll see a date. The original question was posted 3 years ago tomorrow! So the guy in question probably already joined up and is trained and maybe deployed, or went on his merry way in the civvy world.

Good luck with the recruiting process, and welcome to army.ca.
