History Wars

Co-sponsored by the Macdonald-Laurier Institute
A debate between Jack Granatstein and Michael Byers

Moderated by Michael Bliss.

A portion of the proceeds will benefit Wounded Warriors

Canadians historically have been great supporters of peacekeeping, and after heavy casualties in the long Afghan war, many believe the Canadian forces should do only UN peacekeeping, not war fighting. But is this possible or wise? Has peacekeeping turned into peace enforcement? If so, is this different from war? What should Canada do?

J.L. Granatstein writes on Canadian national history, and he has published extensively on politics, defence, foreign policy and military history...

Dr. Michael Byers holds the Canada Research Chair in Global Politics and International Law at the University of British Columbia.
Prior to 2005, he was Professor of Law and Director of Canadian Studies at Duke University; from 1996-1999 he was a Fellow of Jesus College, Oxford University...

Talk about bias. Its not starting well from their introduction of the opponents in the debate.

The presentation below makes it look like Byers is this great expert and Granastein "just a guy" who happens to write on the topic.

Granastein got his MA at U. of T. in history, his PhD at Duke, taught for 30 years at York U., where he became Distinguished Research Professor of History Emeritus, no less. He is a member of the Royal Society of Canada, an Officer of the Order of Canada and holds honorary degrees from no less than six Canadian universities.

There, that should redress the balance of power.

True, but they post all of Byer's academic credentials, and none of Granastein's. Fair would be to at least point out that they're both products of Duke University.

I stand to be corrected, but often, organizers end up using canned text provided by the speakers for such things.
