Why does HMCS St John's have 540 painted as her pennant number on her port side as seen in this recent picture of her alongside in Edinburgh, Scotland?

Don't know the answer, but speculating:

540 was the pennant number of HMCS Beauharnois, a WWII corvette. Made it through the war and was sold to a private company in 1946 (thus 80 years ago this year) and was used to illegally smuggle European Jews into Palestine in the events that led to the foundation of modern days Israel.

Could be a nod to that. Or could be something else altogether.
