Honouring our war dead and vets

I honour our war dead daily by participating in a project to photograph all the headstones and memorials of our war dead. These photographs will be digitized and posted on a website for all to visit thorugh the internet.
The project is called the Maple Leaf Legacy Project and is supported by over 100 volunteers around the world.
Researching the names and grave locations of our war dead is both interesting and rewarding. This is especially true when I look up info for our local war vets on their friends who lie in graves overseas.
I have, at my own expense, travelled to Vimy to lay a wreath to our fallen of WW I, I visited Dieppe and Normandy as well and flew our Legion Branch flag at each location to pay tribute to those who fell and to remind their souls that they are not forgotten.

Congratulations on a great venture that you and the other volunteers are taking part in! It is LONG overdue, but thank goodness it‘s finally being done. I suppose the delay in starting has ultimately made it easier with the new technology that is available.

I checked out the website and it‘s very interesting to say the least. My great uncle was killed in the battle of Hooge in Belgium and his is one of the many thousands listed on the panels of the Menin Gate. I would love to be able to go over sometime and be able to see it for myself. In the meantime, how do people go about requesting copies of the photos of the inscriptions?

As only one member of one family who might eventually benefit from this project, a heartfelt THANK YOU to everyone involved!

i have a great uncle who died in the 1st world war he is buried in netly military cemetary hound hamshire england.have you gone this far yet? if so could you please send me some info on this cemetary and eny pictures of it if possible thank you. i beleave that my e-mail is in my profile. your website will be a great aset to my research on ww1. if you need info on my great uncle please let me know by e-mail good luck and god bless "ubique"

I notice that you are posting from NB. Was your uncle also Canadian and buried in a cemetary for Canadian war dead?

There is a book called SILENT WITNESSES by Herbert Fairlie Wood and John Swettenham. On the inside cover it states that the book "tells of battles, explains the casualties they brought, and provides a complete guide to the memorials to Canada‘s war dead. With maps, guides to the locations of the cemetaries and a wealth of photgraphs, the book is the only full account of this country‘s commemoration of its fallen servicemen and servicewomen."

This is a phenomenal book! It has provided me with fabulous information and photos of a number of locations of deceased family members from both wars as well as a brief outline that has made it possible to trace part of my father‘s footsteps through Italy even though he chooses not to talk about his experiences very much!

Search sites: There are two sites for searching for gravesites, one is the Commonwealth Graves in England and the other is at www.vac-acc.gc.ca and is the Cdn version. There is a link to CWGC. I have found that neither one is perfect and some Cdn war dead are listed in one and not the other. This is especially true for Newfoundlanders and WW I Air Force. Newfoundlanders are easier to find on the Cdn site and WWI Air Force have to be located through the catagories of ‘Air Force‘ and "UK" on the British site.
VAC also gives you a link to the Books of Remembrance for those not listed on the memorials.
I have complete lists on all WWI, Korea, Boer War, Un and WWII Air Force. I am presently up to the B‘s on WW II Army, Navy and Merchant Marine for those interested
