"House votes to nix military bands at dinners, dances"

The real numbers of musicians in Reg and Res would be on the DPGR DWAN site, where they have the OUTCAPs and SIP.

DPGR is slowing getting religion about tracking CAF, rather than Reg F, personnel...

Here is the US Army program web site with locations of bands.

Bandsman also used to be medics or stretcher bearers. In the Reserves we used to have a “Band gun” where the band would provide one full gun crew for exercises. Then they moved the band from the unit and it was artillery in name only.

Yeah, they just seem to have reg force numbers.  That number seems consistent with having 6 full time bands.

Edit to add: It looks like the DHH site can break it down, by province and type.  Authorised, split authorised/volunteer and volunteer.  By my count I see 33 authorised bands for the PRes.

This is more "Let's replace actual legislating with busy work" in the US Congress.

More likely you will find the P/Ys for some of the full time bands are riflemen this or storeman that position.

So 6 of 22 regular force bands are dedicated full time.  A lot of those PRES ones look to be volunteer.  I think 33Cbg only has two actual bands.  CHof O pipes and drums and GGFG band.  Toronto area might have a few more like the Horse Guards, RRofC and 48th.  I doubt there are 62 dedicated PRES bands.  But more than I thought.  Thanks for the link.

many of the other 16 Reg F bands are working full time just their positions belong to some other part of the unit.  Kind of like those recce platoon hockey teams in the old days.

I remember a rather odd situation when I was working at 31 CBGHQ. The Brigade had a military band in Windsor (I often had to go there and see what havoc they created on the Windsor armouries server), but strangely enough, they never seemed to be available to play at any military function....

During my entire time with 31 CBGHQ I did not hear them play (or even practice when I was in Windsor), but often volunteer pipes and drums were wrangled to play at parades, changes of command etc. I'm not even sure if they still exist.

OTOH, the last mess dinner was serenaded by a selection from someone's iPad playing over wireless speakers. I guess we know what the future is going to be like for bands (especially when someone gets drunk enough to hack the speakers.....).

The Windsor Regiment (RCAC) Band is comprised, mostly, of professional military musicians. They belong to the Regiment. They practice the same nights the Regiment parades. They play many, many military functions throughout the BG. If you haven't seen them play, it's because you weren't watching. They are constantly being called out for military functions, throughout the BG. They are also limited to the amount of civilian 'gigs' they play. If a military task comes in, it takes priority over anything else they had planned. If they are not booked when the Sabre Sqn goes out, many volunteer to work the echelon, enemy force or GDs, so the crewmen can maximise their training.
