I recently received my EU passport. No plans to ever leave Canada, but it's nice to have.

I was born in Canada. So were my parents, as were three of my grand-parents. I never considered myself eligible for an EU passport.

But, one grandparent was born in Ireland. You can become an Irish citizen if one of your grandparents was born in Ireland.

Ireland is one of the 28 member states of the EU.

My mother, bless her heart, told me about it and collected the required documents.

In case anyone is interested,

Now that you're an Irish citizen are you going to change your user name to Mario"mick"?

Aye I knew about this Mike, my wife is part Irish and have brought up with her about getting it.

She doesn't seem interested.. she's part Irish so I don't push it ;)

You are welcome, Abdullah. You may wish to show your wife the benefits of having both a Canadian and EU passport,

Yep, half Irish (mom). I've thought about this option but never taken the necessary steps.

The "rush for second passports" may, or may not, be coincidental to these quotes from the 6 Jan., 2026 article,

A November Gallup poll found that one in five Americans would like to emigrate, including 40% of women aged 15-44 — a 400% increase on a similar poll taken in 2014.

Ohio’s Republican senator Bernie Moreno has mooted an “Exclusive Citizenship Act” that would ban Americans from holding any other citizenships.

I believe I read Carney was trying to carve out a piece of the EU for Canada.

Wait for a bit, we may all get new passports for free.

Readers considering EU citizenship by blood "jus sanguinis" may find this of interest,

Canada will never join the European Union (EU). This impossibility is neither a failure nor a reflection of estrangement; rather, it is a structural limit shaped by geography and history.

>Why Canada can’t join the EU

The most obvious obstacle to Canadian accession to the EU is geography. Article 49 of the Treaty on European Union limits membership to “European states.” This has always functioned as both a geographical and political criterion. While some ambiguity surrounds where Europe “ends” in the east, there is no such ambiguity when it comes to the geographical separation provided by the Atlantic Ocean. Canada – however European its institutional sensibilities may be – remains a North American country.
