Hungary Elections April 2026: Orbán Concedes to Pro-European Populist Party

Interestingly, the Rector and President of the University at the time was none other than Michael Ignatieff.
I used to travel to Budapest back in the mid 90s when I worked in Prague and had some dealings through my employer with the ‘IMC’ there, which was the International Management Centre. Eventually that became the CEU. When I was there it was also run by a Canadian named Deszo Horvath who was the Dean of Business at York University.

I could never understand the fascination some on the American right had for Orban’s Hungary. For one thing, it had nothing in common with the American conservative tradition. But most of all, it’s a small, landlocked country with a declining population and the poorest economy in the EU. There is nothing to emulate from an American conservative perspective.

Except a strong affinity for Putin's Russia...

And a distain/suspicion of Europe; a long standing US view.
And a very different approach to acceptance (or more specifically non-acceptance) of migrants when most of the rest of Europe was accepting them.

A nationalist, ethnocentric political movement which focused strongly on population growth by birth instead of immigration with a strong rejection of diversity and focus on ‘traditional values’.

It appeals to social conservatives.

With a constitutional super majority, they will be in position to reverse everything Orban did. Especially stripping powers from the courts and freedom of the press

They're going to do exactly that.

Already put out the warning to relevant persons to jump ship now, before they're forced to.

"We will restore the system of checks and balances. We will join the European Public Prosecutor's Office. We guarantee the democratic functioning of our country."

Magyar also called on Hungarian President Tamás Sulyok to resign immediately after asking him to form a government. He sent the same message to other state leaders appointed by Viktor Orbán. During the campaign, Tisza accused those officials of representing party interests.

"I call on the President of the Republic to immediately ask the winner to form a government and then leave office. I call on all the puppets who have been in power for the past 16 years to do the same," he said.

He mentioned the Presidents of the Curia, the Judicial Office, the Supreme and Constitutional Courts, the State Audit Office, the Economic Competition Authority and the head of the media authority.

"Let them leave, leave. Don't wait until we send them away," Magyar said.

Team USSR 2.0: Gov't says Hungarian people have spoken, those on the leash say this'll speed up the end of the EU.
