Hi all,

I emailed and called the recruiting centre but I got a really vague answer. I'm looking for advice more than an answer. I was diagnosed with depression 5 years ago. I gained 140 lbs during my depressive state. My doctor thought it was a good idea to go on disability plan so she filled out the forms and I got on pretty easily. I was put on medication, mostly for insomnia. Me and my doctor both agreed that its time to take me off the medication so I was weened off a month ago. Now I did a search and it appears that I might have to wait a year before applying, which I have no problem with. I'm 5'10" and 210 lbs (lost 120 lbs so far) but I'm not at my idea weight so I need to get into shape anyways before applying. I would like to get off disability but my doctor thinks I should wait to see how I am doing before taking me off. I haven't worked in 5 years but right now I'm trying to find work. I want to be completely honest when I apply, I don't want to say I wasn't on disability because they'll probably just find out from the security clearance anyways. I'm thinking I might go to school to become a personal support worker and do that for a while before I apply. But does anyone think that being on disability will be a major hindrance? I can get a waiver from my doctor easily. Or should I wait to be off disability for a while before applying? I'm 28 and female if that makes any difference.

Thanks in advance for your advice :)

I don't think your having been on disability would be an issue.  The reason you were on it might be. (my opinion only)

The only way you'll know is to actually go and apply and, as you have said, be honest in your application.

To amplify Moe's remarks:

Everyone can apply, not everyone can join.

You may be getting back to where you want, but there's a chance that the Forces will look at you as an unstable person with your previous problems. I'm not saying your unstable, but if you have a person that's perfectly suited, both physically and mentally, and a person that suffered from depression for 5 years...you know where I'm getting at.

But there's no harm in trying and seeing what happens.

The only ones that can make that determination are the CFRC Dr./Medic and the Recruiting Medical Officer (RMO) in Ottawa. Any other info you get on here would be a guess at best. Go into the RC start the process and when you get to the medical they will ask you to get specific information from you family Dr. so they can make a determination.
