To my eye there is an increasing divergence between Mech Infantry and Light Infantry.

Based on what? Do you think that mechanized infantry try isn’t using SUAS?

I read that article and I don’t see the squad as having some how expanded its area of interest, rather it can observe that distance via a remote sensor instead of with direct EO sensors. We could always see 5 k in front of us, it’s just a) coverage and b) capacity to observe from cover that’s increased.

I don’t know that I see drones as a replacement for for ward observers, I think that’s ignoring 60-70 percent of what the observers are doing and focusing simply on the literal definition.

Is there some hope that forward observers be less detectable than a drone, plus better endurance and a bunch of other things I'm unaware of?

The article is overly complementary towards the Ukrainians.

Oh what the hell, one more on the reorganizations to MBCTs. This is a recent line diagram of the reforming 101st Airborne (from Wikipedia) which shows the brigades and the division in their new MBCT structures.

This provides an explanation of why the MBCTs are down to 1,900 all ranks from the previous IBCT's 4,400 folks.

Note that not only has the IBCT's arty battalions moved to the Div Arty Bde (which we expected), but also the brigade support battalions (now renamed light support battalions) have been moved under the command of the div sustainment brigade, their cavalry Squadrons (bn) been eliminated and replaced by the smaller MFRC and their engineer battalions downsized into a single divisional engineer battalion.

A renewed focus on mobility and survivability has driven efforts to restore the capability.

For Sergeant Rowan Osland, the course provided an opportunity to build new skills and operate in a role outside his previous experience as a combat radio operator.

“We’ve completed our culminating activity, conducting section battle drills, breaching and clearing multiple buildings,” Sergeant Osland said.

“The training qualifies us not just to conduct breaches, but to manage safety and fulfil all required safety appointments.”

The training has equipped soldiers with the skills to conduct explosive breaching, enabling infantry to maintain momentum during urban operations and reduce delays at obstacles.

....

“Following this, we’ll move into demolitions, watermanship and field engineering to cover a broader range of engineer tasks,

....

It sounds to me as if they are going to be the initial point of contact with any new capabilities.
