hi im an 18 year old joining the canadian army as soon as possible (just going through getting all the forms in) and i havent been able to find out if you can just choose your own advanced moc training (sniper, reconnaissance patrolling, etc.)or wether your assigned what you will train as depending on skills. And if it is assigned is basic training a big part in where you‘ll end up in your career. :soldier:

aries85, from my limited, two-years‘ experience as a reservist, I can say that everybody must do the same initial training, depending on the occupation they choose.

Once you have completed the minimum, and have earned your Private‘s hooks, you can take course as they are offered to you, when available.

Certain courses will have prerequisites, some will not.

I am told you can take Basic Parachute after completing your occupation (MOC) course. But forget about pathfinder until you‘ve done other courses and put time in.

Just an observation -- "recce" seems pretty accessible in the reserves. My unit has a recce platoon, with several newbies that finished their MOC on the same course as me. For whatever reason, they are being set up to do a recce course in the summer, and have been doing a comms course on weekends lately (apparently you need comms in order to do recce). Good for them. I don‘t think it will speed up promotion to Cpl, but they‘re keeners and they‘ll do well.

Although I‘ve heard that some res units have a sniper tasking, I don‘t actually know of any qualified snipers in the reserves.

I think it was the Lorne Scots that brought out their C3 rifle to Ex Stalwart Guardian last summer, and I was mincing around and got to look at it, but I have no idea how a reservist gets on a sniper course. That‘s one I‘m pretty sure you need at least to be recce qualified before you can take it.

im going regs and was under the understanding that after the 10 week basic training then you start your moc

Selection for courses will be by your superiors based on merit and potential. You may be given the opportunity to identify which courses you would like, but that will not necessarily drive the selection process. In some cases, what unit you are with, where you are assigned in the unit and any limits to the numbers being trained in a given skill will limit your opportunities.

after your 10 week basic, you have Soldier Qualification, than MOC

If it worked that way, there would be hundreds of snipers qualified soldiers running around because they think being a sniper looks cool. Unfortunately, you don‘t get to choose the courses you are sent on, most of it has to do with your units needs. However, you do get to choose your MOC (i.e. Infantry, Vehicle Technician, Pilot, etc.), so your future occupation in the military isn‘t left entirely to fate.

Only the best of the best get to go on the courses like the sniper course. In fact, I believe only a few hundred, if that, are sniper qualified. For example, to get on the sniper course I am pretty sure you will need to be one **** good shot. So I guess the courses you get are bases partly on your skills.

So if you were going for infantry, you would have 10 week basic, then soldier qualification, then infantry training?

What is soldier qualification and how long is that?

yes

for reg force, I dont know if this varies, but at WATC, their SQ course if 7 weeks.

what is it? you get use C7A1s, C9s, grenades, etc an do some more "combat/infantry orientated" field stuff, like learn how to make a defensive position, how to defend it, how do patrol, things like that
