Ipods

My old walkman tapeplayer finally gave up the ghost, so I've decided to come into the twenty-first century by buying an ipod today to run with.  Most of my music is on cassettes and a few cds.  I have been told about file sharing programs and the like where I can download music and some cadences to run with.  Are there any suggestions for me, any pearls of wisdom that you can offer me as I start down the road.

Hey, I have an ipod and I use a program used Lime wire for my music uploads...you can also use the ipod site, but it does cost money for each upload.

I use Limewire for music for my iPod.  www.Limewire.com
Has everything i look for, plus its VERY easy to use.
Once you install it, and everytime you log on for that matter, it will ask you to upgrade to buy their retail version. Just click later and your all set.

I have a 20Gb iPod, which is huge. Right now I have about 900 songs and that uses about 4Gb of memory.

I would suggest a mini-iPod unless you are planning on downloading a crapload of music.

Updating your iPod from iTunes (the program that you install on your computer to play songs and program you iPod) is as simple as plugging in a cable to a USB drive. The rest is automatic.

I love mine, I have an armband that holds it for running, and an adapter that lets me control it through my car stereo (the iPod sits in the glovebox)...

I also use Limewire. I have found it to have everything I am looking for, and very easy to use. My only issue is the popup always asking me to purchase the full version. But that's no big deal

Be aware that after you load Limewire, you'll have to run your spyware program. I installed it on a clean machine and after installation my spyware program found about 20-30 spyware and cookie installations. Removed them all, and LW still runs fine.

Bearshare is what I use for music downloads, each song is usually done in less than 2 minutes on DSL. Whatever you do stay away from Kazaa though.

I have the ipod mini,  its very durable compred to other MP3 players.
But I cant clear music from memory once its uploaded ???

+1, all download systems (with the exception of Limewire) are unreliable. In Kazaa's case, they are paid to put spyware into your downloads. BitTorrent can be a little bit iffy too. My computer needed to be taken in after I got it.

I've never had a problem with my 20Gb, and I run a fair amount. It even survived a dusty tour in A'stan.

I'll second what the other guys have posted with regard to Kazaa; with Kazaa you will get the delectable pleasure of dowloading (unbeknownst to you) "best deals" or whatever they call it, a brilliantly annoying adware that can't be erased from your system without a first rate anti-spyware program. I'd stick to iTunes which is usually teamed up with iPod. Once you learn to use it there's no going back to the primitivism of the non-digital age.
