Iran Super Thread- Merged

In what way could they guarantee the safety of ships from Iran with a toll? 100+ ships crossed the strait every day before the war, there's a reason why the USN isn't escorting ships now and the US charging a toll instead of Iran isn't going to change that.

Unless the plan is for the US to take up the role for Iran of shooting at ships and blocking the strait themselves.
That's the rub, if you are asking for protection money, you kind of need to deliver.

The US also needs to quietly bang KSA and UAE heads together and say: "Sort out your squabble in Yemen and form a united front to squeeze the Houthis.

It’s probably just my rampant and irrational TDS, but I find “a whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again” sort of concerning as a statement from the U.S. President..

It is - full stop. I don't think that Stalin or Churchill or Roosevelt said anything similar when they were locked in a 'fight to the death' with Nazi Germany. They all, even Stalin, realised that the fight was with Nazism not the eradication of the entire German civilization.

The Iranian/Persian civilization has been around as long as the Greek civilization and over those 2k+ yrs has provided many positives to mankind.

His talk of 'a whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again' rings truer to something that Adolf Hitler would have said.

Feel free to counter this - but it does. The words are not mine, but Trump's own.

"Help is on it's way."

No one knew they had the pilot, until they made the announcement that they did? It doesn't take much to put 1 and 1 together to figure out they didn't have both at the time. As for the WSO that whole saga is documented here, including the ground zero source that everyone was citing that knew about it hours before it was official. And it wasn't a news org.

"A whole civilization will die tonight" kind of sounds a bit like Putin style nuclear sabre rattling?

Is this just another attempt by Trump to flood the news space, or will something happen?

Tune in at 8pm ET I guess....

I don’t know what particular personality disorder(s) he has, but the pattern of continuous demands and irrational escalations fits a few. So he’s at the point of threatening civilizational erasure… Not a whole lot comes after that. When Iran laughs at him and tells him to eat shit, which they basically already have, then what does he do to push the brink even farther? I mean I expect both sides will hit a bunch of economic infrastructure next… But Trump is being defied and he seems pathologically incapable of coping with that.

So, what does he do or say next that’s more extreme than what he’s already doing or saying, and that will satisfy his apparent need to be in control?

Friend, none of us can answer your questions. Its so far outside rational based logic that even thinking along the lines of 'black swan' events doesn't help. I mean, as an example, 'what does he do or say next that's more extreme than what he's already doing or saying', well what about a small nuclear tactic weapon dropped on Kharg Island? Is that inside or outside his line of thinking or ability?

Alex, I'll take "What happens when you combine Antisocial Personality disorder (Sociopath) with Narcissistic Personality Disorder and Frontotemporal Dementia and surround them with sycophants" for $1,000....

Man, who friggin’ knows. But we’re already at the point of a world leader threatening the death of a civilization… It’s profoundly, unabashedly evil even just to say or threaten that, but even still we’re gonna see people line up to minimize, defend or even support it. Only using such a threat as a rhetorical device or negotiating tactic is still evil… The U.S. is the world’s biggest power, nuclear armed, and its president is threatening the death of a civilization.

I’m so sick of how normalized all the things he says have become, how incremental the utter madness has been to the point where something like this can be said and we’re all responding with a raised eyebrow like “oh well that’s slightly crazier than two days ago” and then we carry on.

Stepping outside of my clear distaste for Trump as a person and president- what does this do to America’s place and influence in the world?

A couple important updates have come out from the NYT in the last half hour.

Iran has stopped negotiation efforts with the United States, informing Pakisan that it would no longer engage in cease-fire talks, according to three senior Iranian officials.

From reports that Iran was encouraging people to form chains, it appears some are actually doing it.

People are forming human chains along bridges and around power plants across Iran in response to President Trump’s threats to destroy infrastructure, videos and photographs posted by state and other local media showed. Many of the demonstrators waved the flag of the Islamic Republic of Iran, or held posters of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the supreme leader who was killed in the opening salvos of the U.S.-Israeli war.

In the western city of Kermanshah, photographs from the semiofficial Mehr news agency showed protesters in front of a power plant carrying a banner that read, “Attacks to electricity infrastructure is considered a war crime. In the north, protesters in front of the Semnan power plant chanted “Death to America. Death to Israel,” according to a video posted by the reformist newspaper Shargh.

Iran’s government has organized rallies in its support throughout the war. It is unclear whether today’s demonstrations were spontaneous or planned.

We'll see if they can speedrun this in time, but I doubt it. There definitely may be a few more Republicans more willing to vote with them.

Representative Hakeem Jeffries, Democrat of New York and the minority leader, said in an interview on Tuesday morning that House Democrats will force another vote on a resolution to rein in the use of military force in Iran.

“We only need one or two additional Republicans, and I think we’re on track to securing that,” Jeffries said. He added: “Congress must immediately vote to end Donald Trump’s reckless war of choice and stop him from getting us into World War III.”

What does it say about many Americans (or people in general) who see this post and are throwing their first in the air yelling "F*** yea! Greatest President EVER!".

I think the saying is “I voted for this”
