Considering the Department of War has sent out a request to military personell for ideas on how to bring the Iranians to heel one could be justified in feeling Trump et al are looking to be pretty incompetent on this whole thing.

They are 100% going to get more than a few recommendations to take inspiration from Battlefield 3.

If only it was open for public comment and ideas could be voted up/down. It is a rare opportunity to analyze crowdsourced decision making on a polarizing issue. The interaction data would be a priceless snapshot of how people think about such a complicated subject.

Sure. What’s the lead time for the tooling and training workers? Is anyone able to ramp up production of the computer parts fast enough?

These aren’t Willy’s Jeeps. Ramping up high tech arms manufacture isn’t quick.
 
Funny Iran, Russia and Ukraine somehow seemed to do it. Go for the 75% solution and things can happen.
Russia and Ukraine have been at war for years and it took ire a while. Iran has been deliberately producing high volumes for years already. My point stands.
 
Mobilized societies probably arent good comparisons.
The US has the industrial capacity of all 3 combined, without being mobilized. To give you an idea of the latent industrial capacity in the US, China stopped making AR's because it could not make them cheaper than the US companies. That machining a solid aluminum billet into a complex shape, done by hundreds of Mom and Pop machine shops. I will argue if you go beyond the traditional suppliers, a lot can happen.

Ukraine is having great success with the cottage industry drone model.

Maybe some type of Drone Economic Relief Benefit could be offered to people who want to switch careers and work from home? Have them trained on how to assemble a particular model to spec, ship them components en masse, and then send someone by to collect their output weekly. Use the CERB sign up list as eligibility.

It would be an easy way to kickstart production and develop a new workforce for specialized jobs down the road. Gamify the process so someone who assembles 200 drones a week (just a placeholder value) is eligible for service related rewards/points (doordash, amazon prime, walmart groceries, etc.). If they advance to more complicated models offer debt forgiveness, etc.

They wouldn't even need to quit their day job if a blended participation option had some labour legislation behind it for national service.

Just my two cents.

You willing to give the knowledge/blueprints/tooling for all this high end tech to random companies to make it happen? Sounds like a great way for China et al to learn how to make such equipment.

China is already making similar ones for Russia so this is one case where it doesn't really matter.

Treat this problem the same way the Germans handled their early radar sets: plug and play components which received minimal maintenance in the field and were maintained by 'subpar' troops. One of the men captured at Bruneval had already deserted at least once to go binge drinking and ended up as a British POW.

Since this assembly model would require partial mobilization, we are back to the large, static, defensive formations problem I mentioned earlier. The parts, people, and plans would need to have access to on demand security so any attempt to steal semi-completed components could be met with instant roadblocks and search parties.

Most homes already have basic defensive features (locks, lights, alarms). A rapid reaction force for alarms/security request could be brought out from their local homes/armouries in minutes to get drones overhead and search parties/roadblocks out to shut down movement. Aside from properties with direct ocean access, this model could scale easily as an interdiction threat for any non-official cover personalities who decide to snoop around a home factory.

Another benefit to the dispersion model is that supply chain upgrades/changes disappear into domestic traffic, it doesn't require any new power generation or industrial architecture, it keeps populations stable and prevents internal migration in search of work, and because people remain local their security concerns can be filtered through a neighbourhood consensus. It is much harder to justify access to a rural area than a major city. This squares the round workforce problem without sacrificing metadata insights that underpin threat models.

DJI is a Chinese company, I am sure China would look at these cottage industry drones and go ; "LOL that was us a decade ago". Most of the drone is simple, the warhead is simple, but needs to be made and handled by more specialists companies, the navigation and targeting modules is where the magic happens.
