Israeli strikes on Iran (2024, 2025, etc.)

I was reading that, yeah. A separate article suggested one of the options under consideration is to orbit them high enough to achieve 5-10km/s, which would increase strike time to a few hours, but of course would add vastly more kinetic energy to the strike. I don’t know what kind of ratio of diameter to depth that would result in.

I’m certain I wouldn’t want to be where it lands, but I have no idea if it would offer advantages over next generation bomber-dropped munitions in terms of how deep it goes.

Safe bet Iran and other adversaries will simply go really goddamned deep for new facilities.
At a certain point, the physics of material limitations are such that it would probably require multiple bombs down the same hole to get a really deep facility dug out.

Plus the next guy probably won’t put a couple of straight vertical vent shafts right into the facility. In hindsight that was probably imprudent engineering and it will never stop being funny.

Realistically you don’t need those. You can hammer into the rock and with the explosive force they generate pretty much nothing is going to be having a good day even if it’s a lot deeper, and they just got cutoff from the world….
 
Once you cut the facilities power and access, things will not be nice inside. Lots of problems caused by the explosion, no ventilation, likely some unstable chemicals, potentiel of a underground fire. Even the emergency lights will fail in 12 or so hours, then it will be pitch black. No hope of speedy rescue, likely all the survivors will perish before rescue.

Eventually I suspect the facility will flood and ruin any surviving equipment.

Hopefully. I fear the enriched Uranium may be recoverable though.

If the existing mass is a limiting factor, they need to figure out how to achieve more penetration without more bomb. I’m assuming the existing bomb already achieved terminal velocity; aerodynamics could maybe achieve a bit more there. There’s probably not much more kinetic penetration to be achieved with a gravity bomb of capped mass. I wonder if they’ll potentially look at something that fires a rocket to increase its impact velocity and put more KE into the equation? That would presumably require an even more toughly built bomb so that the fixing and detonation parts survive to the desired explosion depth.

Quite the engineering challenge.

Just need a deep hole, then something like a FAE in after to bring the house down.

Ground team pumps liquid into the hole, move way back, let it rip, then back up the concrete trucks and non ones coming out.
