Italy to send soldiers to fight crime

The Italian army could be deployed on the streets of Italy's major cities in order to combat rising crime.

The parliament will vote this week on a package of laws which will allow up to 3,000 soldiers to be used across Italy for periods of six months at a time.

Under the proposal, the soldiers will provide back-up to existing police forces to restore order in lawless areas. The army was sent into Naples last year in order to calm a series of riots over the rubbish crisis.

Silvio Berlusconi, the prime minister, has promised a zero tolerance policy against crime. "We will put this country's security above everything," he said.

Ignazio La Russa, the defence minister said: "We are making this plan as an alternative to the vigilante groups which have sprung up."

He added: "Our message is clear. In Italy, only the state has responsibility for policing."

Mobs of neo-fascists and neo-nazis have carried out several attacks against immigrants in the past few months, blaming them for Italy's problems with crime.

Troops, if they are deployed, will be used to man check points in cities, stop suspicious people and deliver them to the nearest police station for questioning. The government has budgeted £25 million a year to pay for the proposal....

Correct me if I am in error.  But do the Cabaneri or Military Police already not perform law enforcement duties in Italy?  if so, what is so different???

Carabinieri are a federal para-military police force (very generally similar to the Gendarmerie in France) already doing federal policing duties, as well as sending members overseas (Iraq in particular) on missions.  In this case, it would be the Army helping the Carabinieri and other police forces.

Soooo, are they are they not MP's after a fashion?  Given the understanding that you cannot do a direct compairison to Canada/Italy as the two systems are different overall.  Otherwise, the Army would in fact be giving extra assistance to the Meatheads as might be expected here in Canada.  Under certain circumstances.

Yeah, CAN-ITA comparisons are hard because the Carabinieri would be sort of like an up-gunned-and-armoured-vehicled-RCMP.  Also, the ITA army has its own Military Police who are not Carbinieri.  Not to mention all the OTHER polices in ITA (Treasury Police/Guardia della Finanza, Road Police, municipal forces....)

Like the RCMP the Carabinieri provides regional policing, anti-crime/mafia, counter-terrorism, counter-narcotics, etc. One big difference is that the Carabinieri is part of the Ministry of Defence vice Justice and contains units that in Canada/U.S. would be considered military such as armoured and special forces units.
