I dont want to sound like an idiot here but im 16 and thinking of joining the reserve while still finishing school and hopefully starting over the summer. I was wondering if normally you would work in the town you live in or you have to go somewhere else?
I love everything about the army, i just want to learn, train, and use the weapons that soldiers use, but i want to know if i join the reserve does that mean that i would 'have' to go to war if called for it?

thanks, pls reply  :threat:

Yes.

Awesome first post there, jughead...er jarhead.  Way to hi-jack a perfectly legitimate thread with an inane question.

For seriana:  I echo Armymedic's advice.  However, if you are set on combat arms other than infantry I would suggest you check unit locations for possible co-location.  Wouldn't do for your hubby to join the RCRs and you join the LoSH, for example.

Ok thanks again everyone.  I'll make sure to bookmark this thread so I'm ready when we do make that big step and talk to the recruiter!

u serious the recrutier told me  that serving in the reserves is voluntary, they will ask you if you wanna serve you can say no, where do you get all this stuff?

Moderator edit: Proper spelling, punctuation and grammar useage is encouraged here. Leet/MSN speak is not.

Are you serious? The recruiter told me that serving in the Reserves is voluntary, that they will ask you if you want to serve and that you can say no. Where do you get all of this stuff?

I would suggest that he was answering the theoretical question based on the phrase "if called for".  Everyone else if talking about the status quo in which Reservists can volunteer for operations, but are not "called for", i.e., mobilized, to go on tours/operations/warfighting.

For noob_101 and Jarhead05, and anyone else out there who feels the Army is just another paycheck....

I don't give a flying f**k whether or not you're in the Regs or Reserves, when you swear your oath of allegiance, you are entering into a contract with your government (and Queen, for all you die-hard monarchists out there) that creates a situation of service with unlimited liability (i.e. your life, possibly) on your part in exchange for compensation and benefits from the government.

If you are in the Army, or are thinking of joining, because you think it's a steady job with a good paycheque, and not because you are willing to live up to your end of the contract if called to do so (and YES this theoretically can include the Reserves), then get the f**k out NOW. I am so sick of lazy, undedicated soldiers whose personal lives and side-businesses are more important than serving their nation and living up to their obligations.

I had one soldier in my Platoon, a Private with his hook, who has NEVER deployed, even though the Battalion has done 2 tours since he's been in. Why? Because he's fat, lazy and useless. Zero drive, zero reliability. He's been passed over for tour 3 times now, much to his pleasure (he runs a small business on the side), because of this. Why is this guy still around? I didn't have him long enough to find the time to do an admin review on his to ensure his TOS doesn't get renewed. Although I guess I'm just contributing to the problem by not finding the time to do it. Now he just gets shuffled along to the next Platoon.

We have another guy in the Coy who was set to deploy this year, and suddenly decided he was a "conscientious objector". He submitted a memo to this effect, and under intense questioning from the DSM admitted that he was simply terrified to go to A-stan, and that he wasn't really an objector. Yes, I understand that it is okay to be scared. But Jesus C., he joined the INFANTRY of all things, and AFTER we were already in Afghanistan! Gee, buds, do you think that someday you might have to fire your weapon with hostile intent??? At least this guy has put in his release, and I won't have to look at his sorry face for much longer.

Why are we at this point? Because of all this peacekeeping bulls**t that the Liberals shoved down our throats for 13 years, bought into by an ignorant populace, and now manifesting itself with soldiers (or prospective ones) that think the idea of actually deploying to a war zone is CRAAAAAZY.

Rant ends..... :threat:

....and once you break out of that shell Murph, and get a grip on your shyness.........    ;)

You know, I am a little worried about him holding back like that... it can't be good for his health! ;D

My Dad falls into that category of "but your reserves... reserves dont go overseas...." sigh...... then why the hell did I join?!?
