Hey everybody. I am 17 right now and was considering joining the reserves. I heard about doing a co-op course at school but I read on these message boards that it is better to join normally, does anyone think it is a good idea to do the co-op. Anyway, I was wanting to know if it is a good idea to join the reserves at my age or should I wait? Is there anyone here who wishes they waited until they were older? If I went to a recruiter office how long would it take for me to get in, I know its probably not always the same but a rough estimate would be helpful. I think that‘s all the questions I have for now and thanks for any help.

im 17 as well, and if all goes well ill be going away to basic this summer.
It takes a while to get in, lots of paper work/tests and so on.

I was 16-17 when I joined the reserves. The only bad thing I noticed at joining so young is that there was quite a bit of older recruits going in and I was the youngest. Of course every course would be different but thats the only set back I noticed was age difference. Personally I wish I waited until I was older because looking back a few years, on the way I was, maturity wise and physically, I believe I could have done a whole lot better now than I did then. But this would be different for everybody.

im 16 and im in the reserves right now (PAT). Im the youngest at my unit tho :(

Thanks for the help guys. Da_man you say you are 16 but not if you like it in the reserves, do you?

I‘ve done the co-op, amd I encourage you to check into it more thoroughly. Some guys have had bad experiences with it, myself I‘ve had a great one.

Im 16 too, and theres many people in my Unit that are the same age. I plan on taking CO-OP aswell as still doing my normal reserve job. The only thing with joining is, THE SECOND THE MEDICAL OFFICER GIVES YOU A DOCTORS FILL OUT THING, DO NOT DELAY TO BRING IN. because if you do, youll have to wait 5 months like me to get in after testing.

There is an information presentation sort of thing that is going to happen at my school for the co-op, so I am going to sign up to go to it to find out more. If I do decide to join then I will make sure to bring in the forms quickly like you said Usman_Syed.

Nice, LOL now im having a problem with joining the co-op because im moved to oakville and wont be returning to the same school next year, i hope my other school offers it. Jer, does your school also subsidize an entire semester for CO-op.

Actually at my school we don‘t have semesters, we are still using terms. So we have one set of classes one day and another set the next day for the whole year. This year I have been doing a
co-op for welding, which could be useful in the army I guess. For the welding co-op I go every other day for the whole year. I assume that I would have to transfer to a semestered school to do the reserves co-op, which is a turn off to doing the co-op since it will be my graduating year and I don‘t want to switch schools. I think that this is the first year for the army co-op at my school because I have never heard of it until I read it on the co-op office door. But I will be sure to see what it is all about.
