July first Canada Day but Memorial Day in Newfoundland

I was kind of amazed and sadened at the same time to realize that nobody had mentioned anything about the Royal Newfs today, every July 1st as the maple leaf flys high in ottawa back here in newfoundland the flag flys at half stalf.

I am by no means an expert on the history of the regiment but would just like to mention the battle of Beaumont Hamel.

As far as I know, when Beaumont-Hamel occurred, the Royal Nfld Regt were not a part of the Canadian Army.  Could explain the discrepancy...

That's right Kat, at the time we were a British dominion. As such it's not a recognized Canadian battle honor, but a very somber day here in Newfoundland indeed.

I second that.  I was there a few weeks ago on leave.  It's hard to believe that anyone survived that hellish landscape.  So many lives for almost no gains.  It's very sad.
