Does anyone have a suggestion which program someone who isn't "a computer guy"  can down load for free to encrypt either a complete 4 gig jump/thumb drive or encrypt a folder/files on the drive?

I've tried a few ones myself but it seems like they all install a bunch of ads and crap or want me to use some search engine or another.

I just need something straight forward and simple to use

TrueCrypt (http://www.truecrypt.org/; WFS) is very good and I would highly recommend taking a few minutes to learn the basics. You can follow along with a few demonstration/tutorials on youtube if you wish (http://bit.ly/INUtoh; WFS).

Edit: fix typo

If you have Windows 7 Ultimate or Enterprise edition, there is an option to use Bit Locker or Bit Locker to go http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/products/features/bitlocker.  However, beware that there are issues that may happen, so best to test it before doing your actual encryption.

Cheers,

Bitlocker was compromised a long time ago.

The easiest solution is to forget about adding software encryption to a standard USB drive and go with a hardware encrypted USB thumb drive.  They aren't all that much more expensive, but you may need to special order and wait a couple of days.

If I were you, I'd also be running virus/spyware/addware scans or else anything you do encrypt might be rendered useless because of a key logger or similar.
