Just curious, what do you guys think my chances are of joining the C.F?

A Little bit about me, I'm 21 years old, I'm a male, I didn't graduate High School, Long story short my mother was crippled, and my brother was diagnosed with Cancer, and my dad walked out, I was the only man in the house so I had to take care of things. Sob story end.

Anyways, Without my High School Diploma, I have enrolled in a community college, (Algonquin College based in Ottawa, Ontario) I'm taking Pre-Health Science which will give me college credits, Bio, Chem, Communications, Math, at the end of this program I will receive a College certificate, I was going to take this certificate and apply to the Paramedic's course at the college it self, but it is extremely competitive and I need a fall back.

Don't get me wrong, I'm in no way saying that the Canadian Forces is a "fall back" However, I would prefer to stay in the civilian world, but I am sick and tired of waiting, and sitting around I want to do something meaningful with my life.

Physically I'm in excellent shape, I'm very confident I will be able to keep up no problem with any physical challenges that are to come, Mentally I know where I am, Math is not my strongest however I've always been a quick learner.

I should also mention that I am half Cambodian, I don't know if this qualifies me as a visible minority, I've read that the C.F are lacking Visible Minorities and the numbers are low, so I don't know if that would help me out at all what so ever.

Let me know what you guys think, I thank you for your patience, and to those who actually read everything I had to say, I salute you.

Good day.

I've thought about the reserves, It's not for me, I want to commit my self 100% to something, if I'm going to do something It's going to have 100% of me.

I hope that is not offensive to anybody in the reserves, I have the most utmost respect for anybody who is willing to fight for there country, but if I am going to join, I want it to be the regular force.

Thanks for the reply.

Obviously I don't know your family situation apart from what you mentioned previously, but what would the effect be of you not being around for extended periods?  I see my family once a year (on vacation) when I'm in Canada at all, so maybe that's something to be taken into consideration.

Also, the CF doesn't have recruiting quotas for visible minorities.  We track how many we have, but it's not like we have x spots for visible minorities.

Sorry to hear about your family struggles. Drop by your local Recruiting Centre to go over your options, it's probably the best place to start. They will tell you if you need to complete more schooling (or not), what trades are open etc etc. Also, note the post above. All the best to you and your family.

Good day.

First go and search, second your race/ethnicity is irrelevant to the hiring process, your education and what you do or not qualify for, will depend on what trade you want to pick.  Minimum for most trades is 15 highschool credits (Grade 10) , some trade require a Highschool diploma or GED no if and or buts.  Please don't ask for further clarification beyond this, as there is tons of info already on this site, and the maxim that only those who actually can see your recruit file, can give you any sort of specific pertinent advice (ie Recruiters/MCCs) is applicable here..

Good luck if you apply for the program, or the CF.

There is a five page discussion of "Diversity in recruitment" you may find of interest:

To bastardize a bit of the reported post: you are a unique and beautiful snowflake, your topic is not. Try searching the forums for the answers you seek. Outside of that contact the recruiting centre.
