"Lab-grown meat makers sue Texas over ban on cultivated protein"

Redundant, pointless and stupid. Animals grow animal cells best

Cigarettes next, then - I'm told they're not very good for you, either, right? ;)

And if you think "made meat" is a hard sell here in North America: "Study: What Factors Influence Consumer Acceptance of Cultivated Meat in Italy?"

Cigarettes are bought against advice. As are alcohol and cannabis.

But in all cases the government has become the dealer. Given that the government is also in the numbers game and the protection racket about the only illicit activity they haven't co-opted is prostitution.

Actually we do ban products for that. Check the Food and Drugs Act and Safe Food for Canadians Regulations.

They are thick books and are frequently revised.
You said “false advertising”. You didn’t talk about safety. I already addressed safety in my earlier reply. If food safety is satisfied, don’t still contend it should be banned from sale entirely?

The regs have limits on arsenic, selenium, water in milk, rancid oils, titanium oxide and chalk, filth, rats hairs and fly wings as well as bacteria and other microbes.

This is in recognition of the fact that we can detect at much lower concentrations than we can separate. All food ultimately comes from a field in which animals, birds and fish crap.

Your best safeguard against food killing you is fire - cook your food. Burn, boil, bake or fry.

Your second best safeguard is soak it in salt or sugar. Nothing grows un that stuff.😄

Government is addicted to sin taxes - governments are addicted to taxes - period.

Give them a chance at legalized prostitution - now we've suggested it some MP will want to push it forward.

Well, we can look at the science ....
... but, oh - wait, more science
Guess which one was funded by "big cancer" and which one was funded by "big meat" ;)

Herein lies the problem:

A past PM once said “the science is settled “

The science is never settled or we’d still let doctors be barbers

I think one of the mistakes the industry made when products such as 'Beyond Beef' came on the market was using the terms 'meat' or beef'
Beyond Beef clearly labels itself as plant based. That is not lab grown meat, that has no animal DNA, and that is not what some states have banned.
The “lab grown meat” is genetically cow muscle grown through some industrial bio-proces.

But then it's not food. It's an experiment and you're the guinea pig.
That seems to be a bit of an hysterical take.
But if that is your take, I assume that means you don't eat poultry or eggs because they generally don't bread & raise chickens outside any more.

The problem arises with just putting the word on the package and then putting on display along side the product it is designed to replace.

Beyond Beef patties and sausages are in the same display as the hamburgers and hotdogs.
Margarine, Dairy Spreads and Butter are in the same display.
The ice cream case is full of Ice Cream, Ice Milk, Dairy Confections and Non-Dairy Confections.

Here's one for you. Low fat foods can have more calories than the unhealthy high fat foods they are replacing. To get the appropriate mouth feel the viscosity is pumped up by adding sugars, syrups and starches.

I am in the game and I regularly end up bringing home a look-a-like analog when I wanted the full-fat experience.

...

Juices are another major problem - Juices, cordials, nectars, beverages, blends and most "juices" that name the juice actually are largely mixes of grape, pear and apple juice (innocuous, colourless, odourless, tasteless - all with 11% sugar naturally present) with a bit of flavourful but expensive raspberry, strawberry, blueberry added for colour.

A liter of Coke and a liter of apple juice supply you with the same amount of sugar. And both come from plant sources.

Hens have been raised in coops for a long, long while. I like a nice runny egg with my black pudding.

That sounds like a "you" problem rather than an "it" problem.

Personally I'm all for it but I just wish they'd try growing chicken and pork protein because I think it would work better with the current process. Lab grown meat is nearly 100% lean so fats currently have to be added after, though I hear growing both muscle and fat together is coming along nicely but isn't quite ready yet.

That sounds like a "you" problem rather than an "it" problem.

It is a problem that engages a lot of the industry a lot of the time. The explicit aim is to create replacement products, not alternates.

The producers work hard to create a label that is similar to a product that has market acceptance. Confusion is their friend.
