"Law Experts" Commenting on AFG Situation Today in Ottawa (23-04-07)

I've already written a few letters to the Post about Attaran (as well as to the LSUC, the Cdn Research Council and U of O).  All I felt yesterday was that I was at  some job fair and these guys were trying to sell themselves (just like we did when we were all at law school)

YES!!! I saw and heard clips.  That is it precisely.  I couldn't put my finger on it but it was like a cocktail party during Articling Week!!!  What a great analogy!

God help us if they are successful.

Yeah, but that post of yours sums it up so nicely.

Jim Travesty of the Crvena Zvezda is already on to AG:

Along with either misunderstanding or putting a jolly face on Ottawa's suspect arrangement with Kabul, the minister [Mr O'Connor] somehow missed that what happened at Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq made humane treatment of detainees in Afghanistan a precondition for mission support here at home...

None of the abuse in these latest allegations was inflicted by Canadians, and most enemy captives - even those who clearly sympathized with the Taliban - praised the Canadian soldiers for their politeness, their gentle handling of captives and their comfortable detention facility.

Didn't Jim Travesty read this?  What an asshat!

What's next, we'll be damned for bringing out the comfy chair?

IF there is abuse, then take it up with the abusers!

Outstanding, 9D, outstanding - thanks tons for sharing.

Alrighty: Day has responded to the "law experts" with a resounding, no, no and no.  http://ca.news.yahoo.com/s/capress/day_afghanistan_abuse

Professors Attaran and Byers, seriously if you are reading this get in touch with our colleague Justice David Albee Sachs in the South African Constitutional Court and follow his lead on how to move a country to stop abusing and torturing their prisoners.  Then get on a plane and volunteer your services to the Afghan government.  And if you are fortunate to survive attempts on your life by the very people you profess to want to help as did Justice Albee Sachs*, then and only then you might have earned your 15 minutes of fame and perhaps a book deal.

* Justice Albee Sachs was targeted with a car bomb in the days prior to the end of Apartheid. He lost his right arm and some eyesight.  He continued to work on the new Constitution of South Africa despite several more threats on his life and included in the SA Constitution the rights of its citizens not to be tortured while in police custody.

Law experts, eh?  I look forward to their next stint guest-blogging at opiniojuris.org.
