LDSH Freedom of the city parade

Last Sat I attended the LDSH freedom of the City parade in Fort Saskatchawan.

Quite a show by the regt. They had 14 Panzers, a recce sqn of Coyotes and Kodiacs, as well as various odds and ends (even Poop Troop)all go marching through the town of Fort Saskatchawan.

This was followed by a massive dog and pony in the town park next to the museum.

There was quite a crowd (as you can amagine) for a town that size. The only negative aspect to the whole thing was the paving job the main street will now require.

Kid of like the military version of show and tell. A unit usually trots out its issued equipment, they may put on a little show of their skills as well.

The public is invited to come out, handle equipment, watch demo‘s and climb on vehicles.

It used to be done alot for recruiting in the Mo‘, I don‘t know how things work there any more so I don‘t know what the relevance would be.

It is a good way to get people thinking about our armed forces though...Unless you‘re in Ontario where the units have had to do them without weapons (Do to the PC treehuggers whining that its too violent). Now I ask, what is an infantry unit going to show without their weapons?!

I really love the way that Canada is headed, Holiday trees and all!

At a local career fair, the CFRC and garrison units had a whole bocce court to ourselves, and had multiple displays set up - the medics had a tent with a dummy and equipment, the service battalion had a display, as did the comm squadron and the navy.

However, it was us who had all the guns, and let people see them. Thus, we were where most/all of the guys - and girls went first

Mo weapons in public in Ontario? It must just be for LFCA, because we bring arms into the local park for training a lot. Or is it just for parades etc?

No, just dog and ponies in schools and the like. The universities are the worst for that, it seems.

Shame as up until a few years ago most schoiols actually had a military tradition of sorts. I guess that probibly ended in or around the sixties. When being irressponsible became fashionable and cool.

For the last few weeks we have been doing webbing marches with weapons at lakeshore out of Fort York.

We cadets just north of Toronto are being told that we can‘t take our rifles (Lee Enfields) outside anymore and the town is trying to take them away from us. I hope we can keep them for our annual though.

I was at the Freedom of the City Parade, in Fort Saskatchewan , it was Great! The people here think very highly of the Military , in general.A couple that I know ( We are very good freinds), his wife Cathy calls me " Sarge ", so I asked her why do you call me " Sarge"? She said because you are! She said also said it‘s nice to meet an " Army Guy" who rarely speaks about the army, unless asked by someone.

Geez OCH, whish I'd known you were there. I was hanging out by the kit shop most of the time as that is where my former roomie and good friend, Rob P, works.

I also met up with WO Ted Mc, Lee R and Mcpl Darryl J. who were all good friends from a past life. Also got to see Gary Thiv. and put a few down range.
