Lease issue...

I found these forums when I was interesteand in applying for ROTP - but I couldn't due to medical reasons. However, my husband is now seriously considering going the military route - he's looking at Vehicle Technician as his MOC because he's already in the field.

We worked out the timelines. He's decided to apply in March (we've got some stuff to get in order beforehand), and that means if he's accepted and all goes well, he'd likely be doing Basic this summer and would be starting his training (34 weeks) in Borden thereafter.

I'm wondering, though, would I be sent to Borden with him? Or do postings for training not include family? I'm from a military family, but my dad entered the forces 23 years ago (he's retiring in 2), so things have rather changed since, and he deals only with chaplain recruiting, which is slightly different.

We currently lease an apartment, and have a lease until December of this year. I'm assuming we'd be required to continue it until the end, but would the military move me out to Borden when the lease is up? Or would I have to wait for hubby's first posting after training? We're due to have a baby any day now, so him being away for so much of our son's first year would honnestly just be horrible, if he was gone for those 8 months on top of basic.

I've looked for answers all over the government sites and this one and haven't been able to find them. So just honnestly, how do they handle postings when there is a residential lease agreement involved?

I can only comment on the particular situation of the married fellows/gals I went through trades training w/ a few years ago in Kingston. Their spouses were able to join them ie "posted" once they started their trades training, so after basic, sq and any time spent in the holding unit in Borden. Have your husband inquire regarding this at the recruiting center, they will be able to answer this question more specifically.

I will put a disclaimer on this by saying my info may be out of date.  Hopefully a serving member can verify this for me.

First, you are not entitled to accompany your husband on his trades course.  IIRC his posting to Borden will be restricted meaning dependents are not authorized to accompany him.  You are, however, free to find a place to live off base at your own expense but your husband will still be required to live in quarters.

Secondly, the lease is your responsibility since, if it is an issue, you can continue to live there until it is up or break it at your own expense.  Since your husbands career status will be up in the air until he completes his trades training and gets his first posting you might want to consider going to a month to month leasing arrangement.

You may want to rethink a life in the military (or as a military spouse) if this is important because operational requirements can take your husband away from home for long periods of time.  Even if he is not deployed overseas, unit training can take him away from home for months at a time.  For the first year of my daughters life I was barely home and that was due to regular unit commitments and training and had nothing to do with an actual deployment.
