Looks like we might be getting :

40mm XM1006 'Sponge' Grenades (aka: CARTRIDGE 40MM EXACT IMPACT XM1006) x 4850

12-Gauge 'Beanbag' Shotgun Shells (aka: CARTRIDGE 12 GAUGE DRAG STABILIZED) x 4800

See the Notice of Proposed Procurement (NPP) for info if you are interested.

Sweet...  We got to play with some of those things pre-deployment. The company came to Y-101 and set up a demo behind the building. Needless to say, it wasn't long before we stopped shooting at the targets and started testing the ammo on each other...  Not that I participated; but getting hit with a bean bag from a shot gun or grenade launcher looks like it sucks something fierce... and rubber bullets leave some nice bruises. Good stuff.  ;D

It'll be interesting to see how these are employed within the CF; Riot and civil control in Afghanistan, or breaking up parties in/behind G-101... heh.  ;)

Both the 12 gauge bean bag rounds and the 40mm Exact Impact rounds are already in the system and the tactics for them are also developed. Both systems were used during a recent CCOI course that was ran in Shilo. All in all they are very capable systems. Although the 40mm rounds get very hard at -30.

I grew up in Churchill MB, and got to see Natural Resource officers chuck all sorts of exotic ammunition downrange at polar bears. Cherry bombs and rubber slugs were the tools of choice most of the time.

I've never seen one hit a person, but a frozen 12-gauge rubber slug makes a hell of an impression on a polar bear. When used at close range against a person, I'm sure that 'less-lethal' is a better term than 'non-lethal'.

Never seen a bean-bag round used before, though. Anybody know how they compare with rubber slugs?

They have been in the "system" for over 5 yrs, but don't count on getting any issued any time soon.

Ever seen the show "Guinea Pig" on the Discovery Channel?? Dude had all these weapons fired at him, and they left some mean bruises. Even after a few months, some of the rounds left scars on him.
