Watching this right now on CTV news, apparently a Conservative MP was approached by the Liberals, and he has it on tape.     Here is the Link http://www.ctv.ca/servlet/ArticleNews/story/CTVNews/1116459430183_5/?hub=TopStories

Less than 24 hours before the hotly-contested federal budget showdown, a Conservative MP said he and his MP wife have been offered plum patronage posts in exchange for their sitting out the vote.

At a hastily-convened scrum on Parliament Hill Wednesday evening, British Columbia MP Gurmant Grewal said he's been made such offers before, but this time is different.

"Last time when I was made an offer, I didn't have any evidence," he said, insisting that this time he has an audio recording of the offer from Liberal Health Minister Ujjal Dosanjh and the prime minister's chief of staff, Tim Murphy.

"I was approached early this week by Ujjal Dosanjh and asked to abstain or vote with the government on the budget vote,'' Grewal explained.

"In exchange, I was given an understanding that I would be rewarded in some fashion.''

The offer was made not only to him, Grewal added, but also to his Conservative MP wife Nina Grewal.

Three or four other MPs were said to be the target of similar negotiations, Grewal added.

"At no time did I have any intention of accepting these offers," he said. "I entered these discussions to determine the level to which the Liberal party and Paul Martin were willing to sink to save their government."

Despite the three-time MP's insistence, reaction from the Liberals was swift and unequivocal.

"This is not what happened,'' Martin's director of communications Scott Reid told The Canadian Press. "(Grewal) asked for a post and was told no.''

Dosanjh counters

A short while later, Dosanjh convened reporters to give his own account of what transpired.

Dosanjh said he was approached on Saturday night by a mutual friend who said the Grewals would "cross the floor provided she gets a senate seat and he gets a cabinet post."

The minister said the two met over beer and pizza on Tuesday night, at which point he dismissed the suggestion as inappropriate and directed Grewal to take up the matter of switching political allegiance with Tim Murphy.

"I'm actually offended he couldn't take no for an answer," Dosanjh added, insisting that his party never offered any Conservative MPs anything to lure them over.

Grewal's allegation comes the day after Ontario MP Belinda Stronach left the Conservative benches to sit at the Liberal cabinet table.

Both Stronach and the Liberals have since denied suggestions she, or any other MPs, are being lured across the floor with promises of plum jobs or patronage appointments.

If the Liberals were the ones who instigated this, it shows quite plainly that they will in fact bribe people to come to there side just so they can stay and power.  And in my opinion shows that need to be turfed and fast.

This wasn't leaked,  MP Gurmant Grewal held a press conference to talk about this.

I am withholding an enjoyable bout of foaming sanctimonious rage until I hear/read the full details on exactly who made the first move.

This kind of stuff happens all the time in politics, business, sports you name it.  Its just the timing thats makes it such a big deal right now.  Maybe the pot wasnt sweet enough for him to jump ship, so what better thing to do than to try make some political gain out of it.  Truth will never be known, so is just a he said she said.  In other words ignore this kind of political posturing.

Wouldn't an easy way to back this up (and really gain political mileage) simply be to release a copy of the recording?  Does anyone know how privacy laws in Canada affect this kind of stuff?

Well....as far as I know, it is technically Illigal to record someone without their permission or a Warrant......You have to inform them you are recording the call.

The actual law says that a recording can be made of any converstaion as long as one of the parties in the converstaion is aware that its benig taped.

Slim

Does it matter which one knows they are benig taped?

(Naturally the one doing the taping knows)

Nope. The law says as long as one party does that's good enough.

Back to the subject....Would it be possible for the Liberals to use up the Budget to "Buy" their way to a Majority Government?  Could you imagine the precedence this would set?  No more Minority Governments - easily solved by buying off the Opposition.  Talk about 'corruption'.  Are we, honestly, headed in that direction?

Unfortunately, I think we are. It truly is a sad state for the country, when the government can simply bribe opposition members in order to stay in power. I'm afraid that this will be the new tactic of the liberals, ever get a minority, simply buy a few opposition members. As well just play the hidden agenda card during an election and you will always win. Afterall the devil you know is better then the one you don't know ::)

This is one of the interesting things about the dispute over whether it is the form or substance of expressions of non-confidence which matter.  It would be interesting to know whether the Liberals specifically attempted to stall off and ignore Opposition expressions of non-confidence while actively searching to change the balance in Parliament.

Interestingly enough, the liberal who stands accused of trying to do the buy off has shot back that it was the conservative who approched HIM, bringing with him proof via mutual friend.

When I saw this on CTV, the played a short bit of the tape he made.

Good link.  Certainly puts things in perspective.  It isn't crystal clear who approached whom, but there are certainly enough weasel-words to go around.
