I found a beer stein at a garage sale this weekend.  It has an artillery pattern collar soldered to it; the CANADA in the banner style and it is engraved Lieut. J.W. MacDougall 1934.  This doesn't necessarily mean he was in the RCA but I think it's a good bet.  I'm thinking I might be able to find out who this chap was because this dates from a time when the Canadian Army was quite small.

Any ideas of where I could look at an Officers Role or Army List or some such thing for a little more info?

Oddly, (or perhaps not) the glass bottomed pewter stein is made in China with lots of Chinese markings on it as well as Kut Hing Swatow, the maker.

Thanks.

The Department of Militia and Defence published a quarterly "Militia List" of all the officers in the Permanent and Non-Permanent Active Militia, which was the term used for the army at the time. The DND Director of History and Heritage library may be able to help as it has copies of a number of editions. You should be able to find a contact on line.

I just happen to have a copy of the 1934 and 1936 Militia Lists.  In both, JW MacDougall is listed as a Lieutenant (with seniority from April 1, 1928) in the 5th Reserve Medium Battery in Vancouver.  The reserve battery shouldn't be confused with the 5th Medium Battery (also in Vancouver).  At this time there was a Reserve Militia component made up of officers who were unpaid and had no parade commitment.  These officers were assigned to reserve units of the NPAM, in effect an officer's reserve to the Militia.

MacDougall doesn't have any post-nominal but is shown as a Great War veteran.

Cheers,
Dan.

339140 Sgt John William MacDougall

Enlisted with the 68th Overseas Depot Field Battery
Address on enlistment: Belmont Ave, West Point Grey, B.C.

Based on the current pace at which Library and Archives Canada are scanning service records, you should be able to get his in some time in 2017.

Wow, you guys are efficient.  I would suppose as a Great War vet he wouldn't likely have seen anything other than home service if even that for the second war.

Thanks very much.
