I don't know if i can ask a question about the Navy here but i'll take a chance. Today i went to the recruiting office and the recruiting officer told me it paid more in the Navy because you spend 6 months a year in sea so when your are there you dont pay for food and it's really hard to spend money in the middle of the ocean and you also have bonus since your going far away.

I was just wondering if it's real or just some recruiting tactic (i dont mean he lied to me i'm just wondering if it's that much better money). Because the  Boatswain job looks very interesting.

You get extra pay, its called sea duty allowance. You dont pay for food on board.

It may be hard to spend lots of money at sea, but it's really easy to spend lots of money in port.

Keep in mind that you won't be getting this extra pay right away.  You will still have to go through a bunch of training to get qualified and get posted to a ship.

As was pointed out above you get Sea Duty Allowance which is divided into several levels which go up the longer you sail. If you are deployed you may get additional allowances. While you don't pay for food, ships generally have a canteen onboard as well as the Mess where you may have an occasional beer. This day and age ships do have internet access so technically if you can get on amazon or eBay etc you can still spend money while in the middle of the Atlantic, because I have done so during the mids watch when its quiet.

Thanks for the answers. It's not just about money the job look really interesting and i love seeing different places. I was just curious.

How many months does a Boatswain spend on a ship in the sea during a year? (on average)
