Can anyone help?  I have an old 48 Highlanders medal and don't know how to find which of my ancestors owned it, family name McKenzie or Smail.  Is there a data base that you can type in a family name to search for relatives?

Have you tried contacting the 48th Highlanders and researching their Nominal Rolls and War Diaries?

You can research their names through the National Archives.  The more information that you can provide them, the quicker their response.  You should have their full names, their Service Numbers, ranks, Unit in which they served, dates of service, etc.  All this information allows the National Archives to narrow their search and give you a better insight of their service records and awards.

Sometimes the Royal Canadian Legion can be of assistance.

Another avenue available to you would be your own relatives.  Perhaps you have a family member who knew more about them than you do.  Or, as George said, the RC Legion can sometimes offer assistance.  Even if the Legion (officially) can't be of assistance, theres a very good chance that they were members of the Legion and have friends there still or perhaps another service club such as the Canadian Corps for example.  This of course may require you do go do some digging, chatting up old war vets (they're usually all too willing to offer their help) to find the answer you're looking for.  One other thing you may want to give a try as well.  Pretty much every unit on the Canadian Army ORBAT (Whether the unit is still on it or not) have what is called a Regimental Association.  This is a collection of men and women who have ties to that particular Regiment and there's a good chance there's ex-members there who may hold knowledge of the medal or either man.  ANyways, good luck with your search!

WWI database has 16 Smails and 893 McKenzie's

Lois, The museum is working on a database it is a very large project but we may still be able to help. Could you give more information on the medal? Better yet a scan or description. You may contact me through this board if you like or contact the Honary Lt. Col. Geordie Beal at;
