I think the title of the thread is a bit off. People should respect the police because of the job we do, not because they think they will get their asses kicked.
I have seen that video before and I though it was pretty straight forward. The subject went right at the officer, and then became aggressive. Certainly, only a mentally ill or drugged out individual would behave in such a manner? Clearly, it appeared that the tool was going to become assaultive, and the officer took appropriate action to protect himself. After clearly ignoring the officers direction that he was under arrest for Breaching the Peace, he refused to allow himself to be brought under physical control. The suspect was also obviously not obeying the officers commands to "stop resisting" and "lay on the ground and put your hands behind your back". The demonstrated active resistive/assaultive behaviour on the part of the suspect required the lone officer to take decisive action.
It's all about the officers perceptions. And obviously he perceived a serious threat and dealt with it.
Perhaps Skippy will perceive a more constructive way to spend his afternoon in the future.
