I hate to say it but he's not wrong. The type of MCM systems we currently have and on the way , you would just need a offshore supply vessel for the diving and MCM payloads. Much the same as HMCS Moresby and HMCS Anticosti were back the day although they mostly just fielded the mechanical systems to develop the skills before the Kingston Class were built.
I would prefer to have a purpose built MCM ship with at least a good degaussing system but the other solution would get you there though.View attachment 96796

Are there any Canadian yards building OSVs?

Based on USN experience then converting one for autonomous operation, once the software package firms up, takes less than 6 months. Leidos seems to be doing for ships what Rheinmetall's PATH is doing for conventional trucks.

But for Topshee to have OSVs to seize and convert he needs a readily available supply.

Agreed on the counterweight to the Americans. We want to make sure that we control our own territory so Trump doesn't feel the need to do it for us. If we can establish that working relationship on home turf perhaps we can export it.

These things are all over East Coast ports around the Maritime provinces. They just hang around or work like hell, depending on the amount of offshore drilling or operating is going on at the time. Besides, there are yards that have standing plans for them and can build them faster than you can say Deoxyribonucleic acid.

There is no doubt about that, if the need arises. But I think that Colin was referring to the fact that without such ships in service as of the day of the decommissioning of the last MCDV, the skill set in the personnel, and the availability of the actual MCM equipment may not be there as fast as we can requisition the ships from civilian sources.

That why we should immediately order 4 MPSV's and keep the Kingston Class we have operational until these come on line. Apparently these days they run around 80M USD which in the grand scheme of things is nothing. Crew with half NAVRES and half reg with possible civilians.

Agreed. Though I think I would want them to be part of the CFAV in peace time and only take classes of trainees or refresher trainees out on a regular basis to do the MCM work and thus maintain the skill set.

Use them as training platforms for LAA/CUAS/AD containers operated by NAVRES. Those containers could then be locked on to any dock or deck, especially civilian ones.

How much does an Orca cost in comparison to a smaller OSV? Would they mske useful training platforms?

After the CDC comes online, the 4 hulls could be repurposed as dive and infrastructure inspection vessels.

Sounds as if we are talking about returning to the roots of the MCDVs.

OSVs Jean and Joyce Tide became HMCS Anticosti and Moresby. When the "armed OSVs", the Kingstons, came on line the Tides were sold back to commerce.

They were about 15 years old when bought.
