Maybe a silly question...

Growing up I always assumed that all members of the CF lived in their respective bases.  It occured to me later that, while not on tour, they probably still have relatively normal lives.  After basic where do members of the CF live?  Do the forces provide them with accomodations on base? Do they find their own place to live off base? Do they pay for a place on base? If somebody could clear this up for me I would appreciate it. Thanks.

Yes, we led normal lives. Generally, you have to live within a certain radius of work. There are accommodations for single folks available on base (the shacks) that you'll pay a modest amount for. A PMQ which is either on or very near the base. PMQ's are usually smallish houses or town homes or you can buy/rent on the market if you prefer. Some trades will let you move out of the shacks right after basic whereas others may require you to live in until some point in your phase training.
