The blue and white pattern was designed by Mendel Jacobs, a Scottish-born Rabbi. The distinct pattern, which is meant to represent both Scottish and Israeli heritage, is the real deal. It’s been registered with the Scottish Tartans Authority.
Since Jewish laws forbid mixing wool and linen garments, the navy and burgundy design is featured on a kosher non wool-linen mix. Mike Wilson of the Scottish Tartans Authority helped finalize the design.
“A friend of mine told me about a Polish tartan and a Sikh tartan had been registered, so why not a Jewish one?” Jacobs told the Scotsman. “Jews have always enjoyed a positive relationship with Scotland. It’s one of the few countries where there is no history of persecutions.”
He added that many Jewish ex-pats around the world have links to Scotland.
“We’ve already had a lot of interest from around the world,” he said. “It’s nice to produce a symbol that represents both Jewish and Scottish culture.” ...
