McChrystal Has Some 'Splainin' to Do....

I have not seen anything.  Who is reporting this?
.
CNN ran a banner that "an unnamed source" has stated to Time that he submitted his resignation.

I'd say the good General is in the hurt locker big time - the below quote is taken from the Uniform Code of Military Justice (similar in content to our QR&O vol II)

888. ART. 88. CONTEMPT TOWARD OFFICIALS
Any commissioned officer who uses contemptuous words against the President, the Vice President, Congress, the Secretary of Defense, the Secretary of a military department, the Secretary of Transportation, or the Governor or legislature of any State, Territory, Commonwealth, or possession in which he is on duty or present shall be punished as a court-martial may direct.

[Updated at 4:41 p.m.] Gen. Stanley McChrystal has submitted his resignation, Time magazine's Joe Klein told CNN, citing an unnamed source. CNN is working to confirm Klein's information
From here

U.S. Senators John McCain (R-Arizona), Joe Lieberman (I-Connecticut), and Lindsey Graham (R-South Carolina) issued the following statement regarding General McChrystal's comments in Rolling Stone:

“We have the highest respect for General McChrystal and honor his brave service and sacrifice to our nation.  General McChrystal’s comments, as reported in Rolling Stone, are inappropriate and inconsistent with the traditional relationship between Commander-in-Chief and the military.  The decision concerning General McChrystal’s future is a decision to be made by the President of the United States.
More stuff from the same link

I blame it on beer.

McChrystal is a teetotaller and Obama clearly likes a pint now and then.... like most of us normal human beings of the soldierly persuasion...

Sounds like a 21st Century version of President Truman vs General MacArthur:

President Trueman had an impressive war record:

Possible replacements for McChrystal:

(AP) - Potential successors to Army Gen. Stanley McChrystal as commander of forces in Afghanistan:

- Marine Gen. James Mattis, commander of U.S. Joint Forces Command in Norfolk, Va. He has command combat experience in Afghanistan and Iraq. He was passed over as commandant of the Marine Corps this month.

- Marine Lt. Gen. John Allen, the deputy commander of U.S. Central Command, under Gen. David Petraeus, since 2008. From 2006-2008, Allen commanded the Second Marine Expeditionary Brigade in Iraq.

- Army Lt. Gen. David Rodriguez, McChrystal's No. 2 in Afghanistan. The two men were sent to Afghanistan as a package deal, with plans for Rodriguez to run the war day to day while McChrystal focused on the bigger picture. He previously served as a military adviser to Defense Secretary Robert Gates.

- Army Gen. Martin Dempsey, commander of the Army Training and Doctrine Command since December 2008. Dempsey commanded the effort to train Iraqi security forces for two years, ending in the summer of 2007. He stepped in as acting commander at Central Command after Adm. William Fallon was forced out. Fallon was done in by an article in Esquire magazine, which described him as the bulwark between the Bush administration and war with Iran.

- Navy Adm. James Stavridis, the top NATO commander in Europe. He assumed duties as Commander of the United States European Command in June 2009 and as the Supreme Allied Commander, Europe in July 2009. From 2006-2009, he commanded U.S. Southern Command in Miami, focused on Latin America and the Caribbean

Marine Lt. Gen. John Allen or Army Lt. Gen. David Rodriguez sound like they are likely to prosecute the war in an aggressive manner, the others, me not knowing much about them, come across as bureaucrats and staff officers who happen to be in the lineup....

I'm probably out to lunch, but the last thing they need in Afghanistan is a plodder who is going to tell nice things to Obama while he covers his tail....

my  :2c:

They forgot to consider the Technoviking as his replacement!  >:D

IF Obama accepts McChrystal's resignation my money is on Mattis. He just got passed over for the Marine Corps Commandant job and is considered to be a COIN expert.

I agree.  He would be perfect.
As for putting me in, that wouldn't be a good idea.  I'd be seeking release authority for nukes on Day 1.  And I'd fire them into Pakistan.

Nuking Pakistan would take the attention off BP and Obama's other problems.Great misdirection. TV you should get into politics. :)

What an excellent idea!!

After listening to the talking heads on CBS and PBS evening news the phrase of the moment appears to be "It's a firing offense but he won't be fired."
One of the primary reasons given...."he's a warrior" but he has to get his diplomatic and political act together.

What are the bets he doesn't get fired ?

I've also read commentators saying firing him would mean the need for a new strategy, which could put the start of the drawdown at risk.

Then again, one could always bump up the 2i/c and carry on with the same strategy, no?

McChrystal came in with a team of 3-stars (Rodriguez, Caldwell, Harward etc...)  It would be hard to move him and leave the rest of the team (assuming they would stay).

He will remain COMISAF.
