McMaster to offer free tuition to children of fallen soldiers

By THE CANADIAN PRESS

HAMILTON, Ont. — McMaster University says it will offer four years of free tuition to the children of Canadian soldiers killed in military action.

The university in Hamilton, Ont., says it will also provide residence accommodation and a meal plan for the first year of study.

It’s part of the Project Hero program launched earlier this year to provide support to the sons and daughters of Canadian military members killed while serving in an active mission.

Project Hero scholarships are also being offered by Memorial University in Newfoundland, the University of Ottawa, the University of Windsor and the University of Calgary.

The program was co-founded by retired general Rick Hillier, the former chief of defence staff, and honorary Lt.-Col. Kevin Reed.

It’s open to those under the age of 26, and students will be required to identify themselves as a son or daughter of a Canadian soldier killed in active duty.

This is AWESOME, and I'm glad that my university, MUN, is also a participant (I was not aware).

I hope this becomes the status quo among all Canadian universities, AND I hope this gets lots of publicity!

This is fantastic!  So fantastic I'm considering switching where I contribute to one of these schools, and I hope others follow suit.  Kudos to all schools who are participating!

If there is something positive we can draw out from such a terrible occurence... this is it. Kudos to the Education Facilities that are participating.! Maybe others will follow suit.?

I hope a list of all participating Schools shows up....as well as those NOT Participating (showing them just for spite).

I noticed at the bottom you have until 2014 to get into this program, if this is so my 10 year old grandson will be a bit out of place. If I understand it right.

I missed that part.  Maybe they just have to apply?  Not necessarily be of University age?
