I am currently interested in joining regular forces for a minimum term. I am interested in joining mechanized, but more over I wish to contribute and participate in afganistan. I was wondering how much activity a private in mechanized vs a private in infantry would see (if he would see any at all).

Any thoughts?

By "mechanized";

Do you mean Armour (tanks)?

Or do you mean Mechanized Infantry (the troops in the LAV III),  as opposed to Light Infantry (troops with feet in the dust all the time)?

(For others; I'm not seeking to debate the terms, just trying to put forward the options as simply as possible.)

sorry i was referring to
Armoured Soldier - http://www.recruiting.dnd.ca/engraph/career/tradeinfo_e.aspx?id=11
and
Infantry Soldier - http://www.recruiting.dnd.ca/engraph/career/tradeinfo_e.aspx?id=1031

I wish to make the most of the 3 years that I join, with the prospect of making a career out of the military or as an RCMP officer.

So i was wondering if anyone could tell me how possible it would be for someone entering with no previous military experience to find placement in either position, and make use of it overseas? I would be dissapointed to go through the training only to find that i would never get the chance to use the trade that I was interested in.

Well then, now that I understand the question:

To summarize. Welcome to Army.ca, start reading.

Those are great links and i did take a look through them, as well as search. I havent had much luck in finding out prospects of deployment in any of those though. So i guess i will refine my question (at risk of sounding ignorant of common knowledge):
I basicly would like to know if / what is the prospect of actually being sent overseas if I enlist as either of those trades? I see alot of postings of recruits, and pre recruits interested in similar trades, but, i was hoping to hear from someone who has been through the process? (ie. an unbiased non-recruiter perspective)

If I am restating something that someone has already asked, please feel free to scold me, but I really would like to know.

If you join either infantry or armour, you will get posted to a unit after your training.  It may be the unit of your choice, or it may be where the Army needs you most. So, here's the formula:

A.  If you start now, and estimate a year for recruiting and six months for training
B.  And you hope that the planned cycle of unit rotations overseas doesn't change, and pick a trade based on that
C.  And get posted to your unit of choice.
D.  And land in one of the companies/squadrons designated for a tour.
E.  And the government doesn't change its mind on the mission.
F.  And the Army doesn't change its mind on Task Force structure.
G.  And you "DAG Green" all the way through the pre-deployment training cycle.
H.  And you don't piss off your chain of command and get dumped to the rear party for being a dink, or some other technical term for administrative or disciplinary burden.
I.    And there's not another election that pulls us out of Afghanistan (or wherever) at the last moment.
J.    And you don't get appendicitis two days before your departure.
K.    And the sun doesn't go nova.

Then:-

You might get an operational tour within a three-year basic engagement.

In simple terms, no-one can guarantee you a tour, and if that's your only goal, you may want to find another line of work for your pre-Mountie work experience. Can you say "would you like fries with that"?

Any other questions?

I think Mike is channelling the spirit of Paracowboy. I like it.  ;D

but it has such a nice context to it, don'tcha think???  ;D

Now that the thread's off the rails (and rightfully so)......

Mike's just set the kid up for disappointment. Odds are he's going to read this thread as diligently (::)) as the those recommended above, especially the Infantry and Armour topics.

Then he'll just focus on that one point - - leading to a grievance redress: "Hey, the sun didn't go nova, yet I still didn't get a tour!  I'm oppressed! My ability to self-actualize has been diminished! (insert whatever whiny mumbo-jumbo is in vogue 3 years down the road)!"

;)

The list of what ifs is pretty much what i was looking for. I was wondering what roadblocks might be in the way. Thanks.

...

And i looked into the super nova thing...

In roughly 6.5 billion years the sun goes into red giant phase and the conditions on Earth will be considerably less friendly to life
but dont worry 500 million years from now earth will already have cooked off.

Thanks for the info !

The sun wont super nova or Nova. Its not big enough to supernova, and it doesn't have white dwarf companion to to go nova from its puffed off H during its Red giant phase.

However, its red giant phase (and even as it gets higher up the main sequence curve) will still land us in a cluster****. So hope it doesn't happen, as it would end all chances of tours/trg/ect.

;D

I think the question's been answered.  I might be shooting a bit over my head, but a lock maybe?
