What is it about Russia that seems to attract space junk? First it was the Tunguska event on 30 June 1908; today it was Chelyabinsk. Early this a morning a large meteor, weighing about 10 tons and the size of SUV exploded near the Russian city. Its is estimated that it was traveling approximately 54,000 kph (33,000 mph) and blew-up 30-50 kilometers (18-32 miles) above the ground. Over 1,000 people were injured by flying glass from the shockwave and even stonewalls were knocked down.

The NY Post has a good article on the event.

More than 1,100 injured by meteor's shock wave in Russia

Watch the second video that captures the sound of the meteor exploding.

The Daily Mail also has a good write-up. Sonic Boom injuries 1,000.

That would make a pretty awesome Mass Driver type weapon.

Wow!

Some footage:

(my error, I believe the same footage is in the first article link)

Skip to 30 seconds if you're not a fan of the Blair Witch style of camera holding...

Video has the 911 didn't happen conspiracy type music and the writing is Russian but this looks like the impact crater. (at 3:56)

The meteor broke up quite high in the atmosphere and scattered parts of itself everywhere. The video is of Derweze, as mentioned by a poster on the video. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Derweze)

Also, text is not in Russian.

The shock wave was so intense, that Richter scales registered the sound up to 2000 km away. Insane.

;)    So....egghead eyes were watching for asteroid 2012 DA14 during its February 15 close fly by of our planet & they all missed the one that exploded over Russia...we're screwed folks; we're so royally screwed....    :warstory:  ;)

Interestingly enough NASA has a measurement similar to the Richter scale for asteroid impacts, called the Torino scale:

I don't think the chart does justice to what a 10 on the Torino scale would do to the planet. (Ask the Dinosaurs about that one)

It was too small to detect. Which is also a scary fact. Metioroids that samll are impossible to detect before hand.
