"Of course the allied airmen were heroic -- my father in Bomber Command being one of them -- but the policies of their leaders were immoral."

I thinik his claim about his father is highly doubtful. Mostly because so few survived. He claimed that his father's family escaped Poland shorly before the Holocaust. He has also claimed that his father's family was massacred in the Holocaust. He also claimed his father's family emigrated from Poland in the 1880's. It's hard to know what to believe with Michael Coren. But, without any evidence to support his claim, I doubt his father was an airman in Bomber Command.

"No plans to drop The Bomb on Germany."  Hmm...it seems to me that the fact it was "Germany First" as a strategy, it would stand to reason that The Bomb was meant for Germany.  Having said that, the "low" yield bomb would naturally work better on a wooden city than on a city made of stone and the like.  To imply that it was race that dictated is a bit "inflammatory".

I personally like to read revisionist history from time to time.  This article was just the perfect thing for my brew this morning.

The best part of that story is the link to the Sunshine Girl at the bottom of the page.  ;D

Good Point.
Words come to mind for this article, none of which are fit to write here.

In his memoirs, General Leslie Groves recalled that as late as December 1944 President Roosevelt told him, in United States Secretary of War Henry Stimson's presence, that if the war in Europe was not over before the first atomic bombs were ready, the military should be prepared to use them against Germany.
In August 1945 when news of Hiroshima and Nagasaki reached a defeated and occupied Germany, some Germans were heard to say, "Thank God this came after we had been defeated, and not before."

Seems to me that the title,  "A War Built On Lies", more accurately describes the invective and innuendo that professional shite-disturbers such as Coren like to stir up for fun and profit.

I drafted a long, vitriolic reply to Coren's idiocy. Then, considering the problems our site owner, Mike Bobbitt, has had in the past with some posted comments about some media figures, I deleted it all.

I feel much better, though.

I recommend that course of action. Coren thrives on attention; he doesn't need any more.

You could have mailed it in to the newspaper.  If they printed it, it could have proved rather interesting.

Letter sent to the Toronto Sun and not published:

Dear Editor,

Michale Coren writes ("A war built on lies", Sept. 5) that "the Americans [atomic] bombed the Japanese, not to end the war but to warn the Soviets".  He also writes that "there was never any serious plan to use nuclear weapons against Berlin or Munich."

Mr Coren is dead wrong and has fallen victim to leftist revisionist historians.  Before the two atomic bombs were dropped the Japanese were absolutely determined not to surrender on any terms acceptable to the United Nations (the official name of the anti-Axis alliance).  Had the war continued the loss of both Japanese and American lives in the planned invasion of Japan would have far dwarfed those killed at Hiroshima and Nagasaki.  In addition hundreds of thousands, at a minimum, of the inhabitants of countries occupied by Japan--e.g. Korea, Vietnam, much of China--would almost certainly have starved.  The economy of Japan's "Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere" was rapidly collapsing under allied blockade and the Japanese were commandeering more and more of increasingly scant resources for themselves.  The death of tens of thousand of allied prisoners of war held in occupied territories was also likely.

The simple fact is that use of atomic bombs was the only way to end the war promptly; countless lives were saved.  As for not planning to use atomic weapons on Germany, does Mr Coren really think the Americans and British would have had any scruples about that when their conventional bombing killed some 600,000 civilians?

The bomb was in fact developed largely out of fear that the Germans would get one first.  The simple reality is that the war in Europe ended before bombs were produced.  Had they been available before, say, April 1945 (by which time it was finally clear the war would end very shortly) they would most probably have been used to shorten the conflict.

Absolutely the worst thing to do (sorry Mark, but that's my opinion). Coren needs to be controversial to keep his job. It's how he puts food on his table and keeps himself, uselessly, alive. Letters to editors validate his worthless existence. I will not help him - not ever. He is a pimple on the prick of reason and the best way, in my opinion the only way to deal with him is to consign him and his odious views - on everything - to oblivion.

E.R. Campbell: Well, he's not quite as bad as Egregious Eric Margolis >:D:

What rubbish.

I sent an email asking Peter Worthington to lend Michael Coren some useful reference materials.  Maybe he'll just throat punch him.  We can always hope.

My distaste for social commentators, like Coren, is boundless. They, not the overt racists and neo-Nazi scum, are, very often, the real hate mongers because they propagate ideas that categorize and divide people where no real divisions need to exist.

Margolis, poor dimwit that he is, claims to be a foreign policy expert, but remember the definition of expert:

x is the unknown quantity and spurt is a drip under pressure.

That about sums up Margolis.
