A Vernon homeowner made quite a discovery while cleaning out here basement on Sunday.

RCMP say they were called to a home in the 8100 block of Tronson Road after the owner discovered what seemed to be a World War 2 mortar shell while cleaning the basement.

Since it could not be determined if the shell was live or not, police say the Department of National Defense Explosive Unit was called into dispose of it.

It is believed the shell had been discovered by the late husband and stored in the basement for quite some time.

Police say the history and origin of the shell is not known.

Several discoveries of this nature have been made around the Okanagan over the past four months.

Two sticks of dynamite were discovered on Crystal Mountain, a hand grenade in a Kelowna basement and three shells in the basement of the Lumby Museum.

All were disposed of.
