Hey everyone.  I just want to know if I'm welcome here to discuss topics about the army.  My girlfriend is with the London Ontario Unit.  She is a Corporal and has been involved with the army for just over 3 years.  She has expressed to me her desire to go over to Afghanastan for a six month tour.  I will let you all know that I support the troops over there and I support the cause.  But!! I plan on marrying this girl and I love her very much, she means the world to me.  I will never try and stop her from going because it is her dream to go.  but what I want to know a) what would be her chances of getting selected if she put her name it and b) if she did go she would be there as a medic, how safe would she be.  I know there is always a chance of her being injured or killed but honestly.... do any of you reading this have any experience over there?  I have a lot of questions about over there and I'm hoping that some of you may be able to answer some of them.

First of all, welcome to the forum.
Second, the search button is going to be your best friend on this site, many if all your questions have probably been answered already.
Third, there are allot of people here who have been or are in the sandbox currently or just coming back or preparing to go.

As to your specific question, all members over here currently are at some risk. The level of that risk is dependant on the job they are tasked with. If they are outside the wire the danger quotient increases dramatically. Inside the wire the risk is much less. Soooo if your girl friend is tasked as a medic with the Role 1 then she will be outside the wire. If she is tasked with the role 3 then she is inside the wire. Everyone has a job to perform. Take a look at the Medical forum in Combat service support section.
