This is my first post, but I have been reading topics ever since I decided to join. I went to CFRC Hamilton and was surprised. I read alot of things from people here saying how hard everything is, the CFAT wasn't tough at all, the interview was maybe 10 minutes give or take. The medical was where problems started to arise I was up front about drug use and the fact I had mild asthma, the drug use didn't seem to bother the staff as much as the asthma. They told me I most likely would be rejected due to being medically unfit, all in all though it was a good day the staff there were all excellent professional and friendly. Advise for someone about to attempt the same process don't look like a bum when you show up, and if you have asthma consider not going at all, don't lie about anything whatsoever or leave details out, and with the CFAT if you were able to pass grade 10 with a respectable grade you should do fine.

My advice to you is don't give up!! I was deemed medically unfit because I had major surgery... It took a long time and I had to get tossed from doctor to doctor until I got the answer I was looking for.  It took me only 10 months...
My brother-in-law has severe asthma, it took him 2 years to get in.  He went through the application process many many times, and finally he worked through his asthma and was medically cleared and he's been in for about 3 years now.
It's never the end.. until they tell you to stop coming. hahaha

Well I'm still waiting on a letter from Ottawa, essentially the Med Staff  said I would be denied no matter what but I could appeal to see if i could take some asthma related tests. I kind of figured that it was coming so its not really a shock to me nor am I upset. I understand that if i can't perform people could die or at the bare minimum end up in a Private Pile situation and end up being outcasted from the group. I can run no problem but that's in ideal conditions, comfortable shoes, water, with comfortable clothes on the street. Either I will be allowed to serve or I wont unless anyone knows some organ thieves that have a set of lungs for a good price then that's the final verdict, I started the post just to say how great the staff was that run the recruiting centre and to tell the potential candidates on these forums to not worry about the whole process. But thank you very much for your input if it turns out  that Ottawa will let me take those tests I will stop at nothing to pass them. How did your brother-in-law beat asthma?

I my self Had migraines and ADD, I was declared medicly unfit untill I went to the docs, got some testing done and sent them away to the CFRF, now I'm merit listed for a job, a whole year later, and hopefully going to get one before I have to reapply again, So you cann appeal to your doctor, but from what I gather asthma has a a whole different set of guidelines, ect.

Good luck I wish you the best in your journey, and remember to always stay positive.  :salute:

gillitron,
Once you get your Medical letter take it back to the CFRC, talk to the Medical staff and ask them what exactly you have to do to become medically fit. I'm sure they will advise you to seek a specialist review of your file. Don't give up without a second opinion.

CFR FCS

Thanks CFR FCS. I actually went to a doctor beforehand because I know the CF frowns on asthma, he was the resident of my doctor he wrote a note saying I have had control of my symptoms for over 8 years but that I use an inhaler before I go for a run as a precaution. That doctor along with the recruitment centres senior Med Staff officer checked my breathing and such, but he said due to the fact I was admitting precautionary inhaler use chances are slim. I was going to book an appointment for the pulmonary function test and the methylcholine challenge but its probably better to see what they say. Thanks for all yous guys input
