Mystery Illness in Congo - 2025

Hey, someone just died from measles in that Texas outbreak of 150 people so far…

Edit: now at 2.

But Freedumb eh?

Robert F. Kennedy enters the chat.

. . . But over in Washington, Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. seemed relatively unconcerned by the spread of the disease.
“It’s not unusual,” Kennedy said of the contagion, when pressed by reporters. “We have measles outbreaks every year.”
“We are following the measles epidemic every day,” Kennedy said, before suggesting that there was another unreported death. “Mainly we’re told that the Mennonite community—there are two people that have died, but we are watching it, and there are about 20 people hospitalized, mainly for quarantine.”
“Incidentally, there have been four measles outbreaks this year. Last year there were 16,” he added.
The last person to succumb to the disease died in 2015 during a less severe outbreak in Clallam County, Washington state, in which a couple dozen people were infected.

Le Sigh...was reading that, unvaccinated kid. I call that an (albeit unfortunate) own goal...

One issue with all these viruses emerging in Africa and South America is there aren't a lot of vaccines for them, Ebola being an outlier. Plus side - a lot of these epidemics burn out, but not all, especially ones that are vectored by biting insects (ticks/mosquitoes) that aren't killed off by climate. There are a couple in eastern Europe - Omsk Hemorrhagic Fever and Crimean-Congo Hemorrhagic Fever and even in North America like Hantavirus. CCHF and OHF are largely spread by ticks and mosquito bites, an issue for soldiers who might be crawling around picking the bugs up or not using enough bug juice plus hanging out in swampy conditions.

Make Infectious Diseases Great Again...or to have a catchy acronym, MEGA - Make Epidemics Great Again...

There is also a lot of misinformation and superstition in Africa and apparently Texas…

My daughter is in the medical field. Her response to RFK was the same as mine - what a fucking idiot.

Vaccines are beneficial and save thousands yearly. Not to mention the polio vaccines - which spared hundreds of thousands from a crippling disease. More vaccinolgists (or what you call a vaccine expert researcher types) need to denounce idiots like RFK and DJT.

Agreed...

They do, frequently, just that X is pretty good at blocking those folks out/trolling them/etc...not to mention the Sec HHS has essentially silenced the CDC, particularly the outbreak investigations division. My favorite is Peter Hotez - he's a pediatric infectious/parasitic disease GOD that has a lab (oddly in Texas at Baylor) that develops low cost vaccines largely for neglected diseases in Third World countries. He came up with hookworm and schistosomiasis vaccines, amongst others. Peter Hotez - Wikipedia

CDC Data on Measles as of 21 Feb 25. Previous years data included. It would appear that the current outbreak is not unusual or out of whack. Actually seems pretty normal. There are concentrated groups of people who do not accept vaccinations as part of their religious being.

From the article.
Gaines County, located in West Texas, continues to lead the pack, accounting for 80 of the total infections. Terry County had the second highest number at 21. The center of the outbreak is believed by health officials to have stemmed from the small, tight-knit Mennonite community in Gaines County.
