Naked people pose on Swiss glacier
'Living sculpture' meant to raise awareness about global warming
The Associated Press
Updated: 1:30 p.m. PT Aug 18, 2007
BETTMERALP, Switzerland - Hundreds of naked people formed a “living sculpture” on Switzerland’s Aletsch glacier Saturday, hoping to raise awareness about climate change.

The photo shoot by Spencer Tunick, the New York artist famous for his pictures of nude gatherings in public settings worldwide, was designed to draw attention to the effects of global warming on Switzerland’s shrinking glaciers.

“The melting of the glaciers is an indisputable sign of global climate change,” said the environmental group Greenpeace, which co-organized the event.

It said most Swiss glaciers will disappear by 2080 if global warming continues at its current pace.

The event, which followed Tunick’s previous shoots in London, Mexico City and Amsterdam, was designed to minimize any impact on the environment, Greenpeace said.

Temperatures during the shoot hovered around 50 degrees.

Fred would not know what he is looking at anyways. ;D No this seems to be the new standard on how to get media attention. The anti- fur group did it awhile back for instance. My vote is get more university types involved.  ;D Just think we could have the "Best Nude Radical" instead of "Miss Universe".

Other than the fact that this happened on a glacier - where there was no needed police action, nude protests has one benefit.... no need to frisk the friskies!

I'm all for nude protests increasing world awareness.

Until they do one for obesity.

Can you imagine trying to pick up though?
"Ahh, yeah... its not normally this small. I mean, hell! We are on a glacier..."

Heh...
There was an editorial in the local rag today (Montreal Gazette)
Observations that none of the people in the photo were obese.... leading to the ASSumption that everyone in Switzerland is a lean, mean, radical machine :)

Having visited the Cantons.... I think not!

Must encorage more nude protest...

It seems there are a pair of sisters by the name of Webb(?) doing just that. CBC had a program titled Lens on last night with an episode called Naked. Chronicling the use of nudity in protest movements, it seems Vancouver and area are the worlds top spots for this form of protesting. Although, the world wide female nude peace symbol movement was interesting the program as whole was quite interesting in both the historical context and the way the female protesters deal with the "voyeurs" that show up at these protests. Warning if you have minors you may want to send them out, as there was no censorship in the production.

The only watchable part of that program was, admittedly, seeing hot young "chicks" getting naked.  Other than that, watching that lady start crying over "killing and maiming...in my name!"  I lost it.  And it seems that this "documentary" was done by one of the womyn (sic) who is part of the "movement".  If it were done by a less biased person, it may have been a bit more palatable.

Fave quote: "I've got a PhD, and nobody listens to me.  I take my top off, and you're here in the hundreds."
I've got news for you lady, they're still not listening to you!  The reaction would have been "Huh?  Did you say something?"
>:D

Just let me know when the next "chaps protest" is occuring. I'd be in there in a heartbeat ...

Whooooooooooooo!!!  :D

hence the double entendre: sic (as in that's both how it's spelled AND how it makes me feel)

Oh, and Sally Field's little "if women ran the world, there'd be no goddamned wars!"  How sexist!  "Only men" fight wars, eh, Gidget?  What of Jeanne d'arc?  Or Maggie Thatcher?  Golda Meier (sp)?  Gawd, I really hate it when I hear stuff like that.

Sorry, I know, tangent.  Went from "Naked Protesters" to "Sally Fields".

She's full of crap ...

There'd be a whole new war one week a month.

Got to get rid of the men who stress us out somehow.  ;)

Of course this means that all the women in the world would "harmonise" on a monthly basis.  And yes, it's a great way to rid yourself of those stressors in life (or so I've heard)  >:D
