I am a volunteer for a project called the National Inventory of Canadian Military Memorials (NICMM). This project is an attempt to catalogue every military memorial across Canada. We want to record information about all the existing memorials since no level of government has ever kept track of what memorials exist, where they are and how they are being taken care of. We hope to catalogue not just the major monuments usually found near government buildings, but also the smaller memorials such as plaques, or stained glass windows, or certificates often located in churches, schools, community halls and public buildings. We hope to capture all the names listed on these memorials in order to build a proper database of those courageous souls who lost their lives for the freedom of Canada. We require detailed photographs of each memorial, so we can transcribe the text on each memorial and provide a digital database of this information for research and historical purposes.

This project has been on-going for a few years, and the current results can be found at our web site at http://www.dnd.ca/hr/dhh/memorial/engraph/home_e.asp?cat=2.

I have also started a web site that will provide more picture than can be put on the NICMM, along with maps and historical information about the memorials. My site is located at www.5thwheel.com/memorial and I would appreciate including this site on your cenotaph’s page.

I am a new to this site and forum. I have spent the last two years working on this project on the side and have visited over 500 cities, towns and village in Ontario alone, not counting hundreds of other places in Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and PEI. But this is a large country and as much as I would like to try to get all the memorials myself, my wife would probably divorce me.

Therefore I am looking for other people to help in this project. Hopefully there are people here who could take some time and help capture this information for the NICMM. I have a page on my site, http://www.5thwheel.com/memorial/Standards.htm that shows how best to capture a memorial for this project. Please visit either site and if you see that there is a cenotaph or any other type of military memorial near you, please take some pictures and send us the information.

There is a new monument here in the town of Oakville, Ontario. (Between Toronto and Hamilton) It was dedicated last year during Remembrance Day ceremonies. It is located in the newly developed portion of northern Oakville, just southwest of the intersection of Trafalgar Road and the Dundas Highway. It commemorates those who served from the Town of Oakville as well from the former Township of Trafalgar (absorbed by Oakville in the 1960's). It is quite impressive, the centrepiece being an arch formed by the sandstone facade of the former Trafalgar Township Hall, which originally stood just to the east. The dedication was covered by the Oakville Beaver, which you can contact at: http://www.haltonsearch.com/hr/ob/. They probably have photos on file.

(The Oakville monument on Trafalgar Road that your inventory refers to is the old monument in George Park downtown.)

Hope this info is of use.

Cheers

Thanks for the suggestion. I actually got a chance to get over to the new memorial just before the first snows this winter, but just have not had the spare time to get the information onto either sites. I am looking for pictures of the the Township Hall with the original plaques to add to the new memorial's page if anyone had them?
