Talk about warm and fuzzy. The NDP wants to turn the Canadian Forces into forest fire fighters. This is the defence section of their platform (the last part of the document, natch--and note there is no costing):

Canada’s military has a proud history, built on the principles of defending human rights and promoting peace. New Democrats believe there are three main priorities for the Canadian military today and in the years to come:

1. Assist people facing natural catastrophes, including floods, earthquakes, forest fires [emphasis added] and other emergencies, both at home and abroad [emphasis added].
2. Provide support for peace-making [isn't that what we're doing in Afghanistan, Jack?--with a UN Security Council mandate], peace-building and peacekeeping around the world.
3. Defend Canada from potential attack...

When in power in Ontario a while back the NDP hung a cop out to dry for daring to defend his partner with lethal force from a gentleman of a different ethnic background who was intent on driving a butcher knife through said partner's head. Said partner had already been incapacitated byt he gentleman in question and was lying on the floor bleeding!

The NDP charged the cop with murder 1 and it took him a good while (years) to get clear of the charge.

That, amoung other acts while in power, is probably (hopefully) enough to keep them out of Ontario for the next 10 years or so, never mind the real seat of power!

Maybe it's the beer talking, but wouldn't defend Canada from potential attack be the number one priority?

Then they'd have to commit Seppeku! ;D

I actually have to give them credit. It was more then I thought.

I expected their defense platform to be a cutback down to 12 people (obviously of different background groups) in non-aggressive uniforms, a bunch of shovels, and a snowblower.

You forgot to mention the issuing of non-offensive, gender neutral flowers to be used as a peace offering to anyone not playing nice with us. Also, a change in the dress reg's would include long hair, and the wearing of flowers in said hair. Also, they would be permitted to wear a beard as the shaving would not be needed for the gas masks as they would no longer be in use.

I guess you didn't get the memo.....

Due to people's sensitivity to smells and perfumes......Canada has now become a non-flower zone!!!

And from this

Jack makes his way this way - what a surprise....
NDP Leader Jack Layton said he is "heartened" by a British general's realization that Western forces cannot win a military victory in Afghanistan.  Campaigning in Newfoundland on Sunday, Layton said "there has got to be a new path" for the West in Afghanistan, because "clearly things aren't working." To back that, he cited the booming heroin trade, increasing civilian and military casualties, and the inability of Western forces to control large parts of the country.  Earlier Sunday, British Brig.-Gen. Mark Carleton-Smith told a London newspaper that Western forces will never win against insurgents and may need to include the Taliban in any long-term solution ....

According to his priorities, lets see what we do in this scenario :

There is a forrest fire in BC but someone is trying to invade us at the same time from the East.  According to Jack, we'll send all of our troops in BC, trying to extinguish the fire while the mighty invaders gain terrain from the East.  Once the fire is extinguished, we'll finally exchange our hose with weapons and fight...  What a jackass.
