There are currently no plans to issue a Canadian version of Queen Elizabeth II's Platinum Jubilee Medal.

There is a petition sponsored by Chery Gallant, member for Renfrew—Nipissing—Pembroke, which is open until August 7 for signatures.

Why bother? It just waters down our honours and awards, and they become a party favour for MPs to hand out to constituents.
Fully agree. The debacle of the last "Jubilee" medal should once and for all put a nail in these.

after having to do an hour and a half parade, in DEU 1, in the burning heat of an Alberta summer, to see our CO pin their own Queen's Diamond Jubilee Medal to themselves.... I have no appetite for commemorative medals and view them with contempt.

Instead, lets have DHR put their efforts into developing an Operational Service Medal for Domestic Response that can be awarded not only to military folks, but to the countless Emergency Services and Healthcare Workers that have saved our asses over the past 18 months.

The Special Service Medal (SSM) was created to recognize members of the Canadian Forces who are taking part in activities and operations under exceptional circumstances.

ELIGIBILITY & CRITERIA

The Special Service Medal (SSM) recognizes members of the Canadian Forces (CF) who have performed a service determined to be under exceptional circumstances, in a clearly defined locality for a specified duration. The SSM recognizes approved activities underway on 11 June 1984 or subsequently established.

This medals is always issued with a bar that specifies the special service being recognized, each bar having its own criteria.

8 pages of enthusiasm,

Are they trying to tell us that the Toronto Snowstorm dig-out was not worthy of a medal?

Crossed shovels?

That would be kind of them. But, emergency services already get a medal from Ottawa after 20 years on 9-1-1 operations, and a bar after 30 years.

U.S. military,

You've nicely described the rack for many Senior Officers and NCOs out my way, completely unsullied by any messy operational type medals of course :)
You forgot the OMM for “Best Organizer of Mess Functions” 👍🏼

We may see a change depending on how the election goes, if it happens in time.

Or.... to the (Reg F) RSM for organizing the construction of a kiddies play area for the Bde HQ dependents (which was demolished ayways when they moved out of the location and handed the land back to the First Nations)...

That’ll only take 10 years for the CAF to implement the COVID-19 response medal with a convoluted set of eligibility criteria. Just in time for the retirement of those that were part of the operations.

For sure, either give it to everyone in uniform, or don't issue it at all. The arbitrary nature of it last time was a bit silly; some people got nominated for really good reasons, others because they were favourites or to meet a unit quota, while the level of paperwork required meant that others didn't both nominating anyone. The same thing happened with the ones given out to civvies by MPs; some were genuinely deserving of some kind of recognition, while others just happened to be boosters of the politician.

But when Justin Bieber got it, I just had to laugh.

At least the award proves that criminals can still get medals, so we're not all about 'sh*t rat shaming' or anything :)

You're assuming the COVID-19 "event" will be done by then.....

The only thing worse than having nothing more than a CD to show for one's time-in is having a CD plus some participation trophies.

The British will issue one so, I assume, based on the 'me too' policy we will eventually do the same:

Extra Bank Holiday to mark The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022

Plans for the Platinum Jubilee are being developed in conjunction with some of the UK’s leading creative minds, event organisers and world class digital design companies. Using the talents of the UK’s cultural and creative sectors, the programme will engage young people from across the Commonwealth and use new technology in exciting ways.

In keeping with tradition, a Platinum Jubilee medal will be awarded to people who work in public service including representatives of the Armed Forces, the emergency services and the prison services. This tradition stretches back to the reign of Queen Victoria when an official medal was designed to mark her 50th anniversary on the throne.
